Loved these stories of much loved dogs. The incredible sadness of their passing healed by the next love. Each dog it's own self, each one special and much loved.

How many of us would lie with a dying dog for days?

Deeply touching to me at times, the depth and sincerity of Brian Sewell's relationships with his dogs over his lifetime is a read not quite like any other I've experienced. I've owned dogs and had to make those decisions for them on ending their lives, but never with the feeling I got reading Sewell writing how he laid on the floor with one of his dying dogs. I've read more about Sewell's life [he died on September 19th 2015] and he was quite a controversial character in his personal and professional life, not one to shy from an intellectual fight or deny a disgraced mentor, he was also a real dog person and his book reflects his lifetime commitment to his animal companions.

Simple Tools and Techniques for Enterprise Risk Management builds from the bottom up to provide a readily understood methodical approach to risk management, while at the same time describing the diverse sources of risk, to encourage a broad approach. To convey the context of enterprise risk management, the commissioning process when engaging consultants, a common approach to implementation and the sources of risk, the book is divided into five parts.

Part 1 describes the catalysts for and developments in corporate governance, internal control and risk management.
Part 2 examines the procurement of risk management services by a client together with the steps a consultant engages in, in terms of interviewing the client prior to an assignment and the preparation of a proposal, to secure a new commission.
Part 3 describes the risk management process being composed of six stages. The inputs, outputs, constraints and enablers of each stage are described to aid implementation.
Part 4 describes what are termed management applications, those sources of risk that to a large extent are under the control of any individual business.
Part 5 describes the external influences on a business which present sources of risk which in the main are beyond the control of any one business

A Summary of the Current Techniques

It is not generally considered that business, all business operates in an element of risk. Everything from the price of supplies to Government actions involve risk. Often this risk is absolutely impossible to predict, i.e. those who went to work at the top of the World Trade Center one September morning. And as a result the analysis of risk in ventures has taken on great urgency.

Commensurate with this has been the development of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) tools to provide a framework for managing company-wide risk. It begins with overall corporate governance which establishes guidelines for the company to operate. Various phases within the process then include such activities as identifying, evaluating, and controlling risk within those guidelines.

The book is written from a worldwide basis and discusses recent changes in various countries such as the U.K., U.S.A. and Canada. These changes brought about by spectacular busines failures such as Enron, WorldCom, and the resultant troubles of companies such as Arthur Anderson have created an environment where the executive is taking a much greater interest in the management of the company as his risk of prison increases.

Dr. Chapman has a long history of working in the risk management area, including getting his Ph.D. in that area.

All you need to know about medicinal chemistry.

This book focuses solely on the basic, fundamental concepts governing the discipline of medicinal chemistry. Every drug is a chemical structure that contains numerous functional groups arranged in a specific manner. These functional groups determine the interactions of the drug molecule with its biological target, its pharmacological action, the route by which it is administered, the extent to which it is metabolized and the presence or absence of specific adverse reactions or drug interactions.

The chapters in this book have been carefully organized to allow the reader to gain knowledge progressively about the chemistry of drug molecules, with each chapter building on the previous one. The first chapter reviews the numbering of alicyclic and heterocyclic rings, the designation of aromatic ring positions and steroid nomenclature, while the second chapter focuses on the chemical characteristics of functional groups and the roles they play in drug action.

The following chapters identify those functional groups that are acidic or basic, review a strategy to calculate the extent to which they are ionised in a given environment and then examine how these characteristics contribute to the overall solubility of the drug molecule. Subsequent chapters discuss the types of binding interactions that can occur between a drug molecule and its biological target and how stereochemistry of the molecule can also affect its interaction with biological targets. Emphasis is placed on the pharmacological and therapeutic differences that can occur between enantiomers.

A chapter is devoted to exploring the metabolism of drug molecules by various enzymes. It identifies the functional groups that are susceptible to each type of metabolic transformation, enabling the reader to become more proficient in predicting the possible metabolic transformations for a given drug molecule. In the final chapter, the concept of structure-activity relationships is introduced along with the concepts of molecular modification to design new drugs and analogues of existing drugs. This book is extremely well structured and easy to follow. It navigates through medicinal chemistry in a way that makes the subject easy to understand. It will be a great asset to students embarking upon a healthcare career or to practitioners who need to brush up on medicinal chemistry.

Medicinal Chemistry makes sense

This book makes Medicinal Chemistry make sense. It's laid out in easy to digest chapters with lots of examples and practice problems. Other books I've read on the subject aren't written for someone with not a lot of background in Chemistry, so they were difficult and muddy. Harrold and Zavod did a great job providing a breakdown of the fundamental pieces of Medicinal Chemistry. I honestly enjoyed reading this book and understand so much more of the foundational pieces I need for my continuing years in Pharmacy School. I would highly recommend everyone that's looking for a place to start or to solidify their skills to read this book. It's the one book I will definitely use over again.

These include a ritual of play, symbolic allusions to different classes of people, a diversity in the forms of names used upon marriage, the play between genders and gender-neutral language, and the relationship between language, nature, community, and politics. Concluding commentary links the studies to the contemporary American scene, and shows how the focus on communication can integrate into community living both shared and separate identities. Emerging from these studies is a view of communication as not only a situated expression of selves in American scenes, but also an active contributor in constituting those very identities and scenes.

About the Author
ANDRAS GERO was born in Budapest in 1952. He is the director of the Hapsburg History Institute and Professor at the ELTE University Faculty of Economics and Social History. He also lectures regularly at the Central European University. His research territories are the era of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the development of the middle class and the history of symbolic politics. He is editor in chief of Budapesti Negyed and a member of the editorial committee of Szazadok.

great account of the austro hungarian empire

this book is very good and deserves your attention this book covers the last 50 years of the
habsburg empire and there is in the first but pretty long chapter that covers the habsburg empire
from its begining to the creation of the austro hungarian dual monarchy as the book totaly points out
the austro hungarian empire lasted longer then the successor states at the end of world war one
and even though the monarchy has vanished close to a century ago remeberance of the empire
still continue to fasinate people to this day what is interesting is that the austro hungarian empire
had produced some of the most brilliant minds of the late 19th and early 20th centuries
with people like sigmund freud , great military thinkers like conrad von hotzendorf
and archduke karl, franz ferdinand, and it is interesting to note that might not be menched in the book
is the fact that most of germanys scientist and enginiers during world war 2 came from the former dual monarchy
they also helped the united states after world war 2 and today when there now exists a european union
which some have said is a modified version of the austro hungarian empire
