Fascinating

The story is pretty good ... but it is all the details that make this a hit.
It really sets in after several chapters and you won't want to put it down.

I am tired of the same old grade school level Sci-Fi fantasy books that are more drama than intellect.
(This one has all that ... but it makes you think too.)

So much depth in it that you could spend days just verifying the story as "based in truth."
That is what makes it fascinating. Eye opening ... answered questions about mysteries of today and antiquity.
Someone with brains wrote this ... And it is a good read.

About the Author

Leonard L. Vasiliev is president of the NIS Association "Heat Pipes" and head of the Porous Media Laboratory, A.V. Luikov Heat and Mass Transfer Institute, National Academy of Sciences, Belarus. He obtained his first doctorate degree (Candidate of science) in 1964 in Minsk. He is currently a member of the Scientific Council of the International Centre for Heat and Mass Transfer. Professor Vasiliev has authored or co-authored about 340 publications in journals and conference proceedings. He is the author and co-author of 14 books, 218 Soviet authors’ certificates on invention, and 12 patents.

Sadık Kakaç received his degree of Dip.-Ing (1955) from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Istanbul (ITU, MS degrees from MIT in mechanical (1959) and nuclear engineering (1960). He has authored or co-authored over 200 scientific papers on transient and steady-state laminar, turbulent forced convection, two-phase flow instabilities, fuel-cells modeling, micro heat transfer with sleep flow, and Micro/nano heat transfer. He is a fellow member of ASME and a recipient of the ASME heat transfer memorial award. He is a member of the scientific council and executive committee. Prof. Kakac edited and co-edited 14 volumes on thermal and fluid sciences and applications including a hand book o convective heat transfer.

Novel of Freedom lost and Gained by Heinlein

Maybe I am a simpleton or view things far differently then the other reviewers do but I loved this book. I do not feel that the rather straightforward and unencumbered nature of the storytelling distracted from the tale being told. Just the opposite. This book inspired me and invigorated me with a sense personal freedom that I am sure was part of Mr. Heinlein's intent.
I do not agree that the Asian references were racist. These references were merely plot mechanisms and devices. Readers should remember that Heinlein was a product of the World War II generation and his life was greatly shaped by the events surrounding that war and they are reflected in many of his works.
A great novel with shades of Libertarianism shining through. A definite recommend on my part.

I have to question the conclusions of some of these readers.

I do not think that Heinlein in any way meant to promote a racist viewpoint. This conclusion comes from a careless reading of the novel and knee jerk reactions to some of the racism presented in the novel.

If anything Heinlein seems to criticizing racism and any subtle government encouragement of racism. Early in the book, one of the characters states,

"But from my standpoint they are simply human beings, who have been duped into the old fallacy of the state as super entity".

The citizens of the PanAsian Empire are not the only ones that have been duped; it is clear that we ourselves our products of deception by our own government. White superiority was encouraged in the forties and to an extent is still encouraged in our minds. Those who think that modern day military men would not speak as the ones in the novels do, are wrong. The majority of people in the US are white; the majority of politicians are white. For politicians. it benefits them to encourage the idea that whites are superior in order to keep them in power. This is why every election year, blacks are reminded that they are victims and can get no where without a white man in office interceding for them.

Finny';s comment on a racial inferiority complex is an astute observation not blantant racism. Just as the white culture sometimes encourages a stifling superiority complex, it has in other cultures, created an inferiority complex , a desire to one up arrogant white people by showing them they are just as good. Much of the focus in the idealogy in the Communist Revolution in China, was on creating a viable alternative to Western culture just as good if not better than Western Culture. They wanted something that was an unique product of Asian will, in no way similar to the culture of arrogant Westerners(a reputation we probaly rightly deserve). This is not mindless racism, but a conclusion reached by examination of modern Asian history.

As reviewers have stated previously, Heinlein's point is that our fears stem not from any different biological differences, but from differences in culture. His other point is that no matter how different a culture, there is always one thing similar in all cultures- that of assumed superiority. The whites and PanAsians in the novel are both guilty of that.

In the end however, the human spirit transcended all races and rose to the occation , for as someone pointed out, the hero was not white, nor was he wholly asian. He was not a champion of any cause held by one race, but was a hero because he adhered to a cause that should be held in high esteem by all...he helped his fellow man regardless of race.

Heinlein's simple message is that racist fear is not productive or rational. It quite simply is stupidity of the highest order.

Just a few other commentaries I have.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned that the hero, Mitsui was married to a black woman. Quite a revolutionary idea for 1941.

That makes me further question how anyone could determine that Heinlein was promoting racism. Do not give in to knee jerk reactions I take it that some of you rather pretend racism does not and never did exist instead of having an open and honest dialogue about it. That is not a solution. That only ensures that racism will grow in our collective concious and rear its ugly head in the future when we have long forgotten about it and the grief and horror it caused.

Another bit of commentary...Heinlein's prediction that Asia would become a major player on the world chess board in the future was a pretty accurate prediction. All Asian countries are rapidly growing, politically, militarily and economically. Though it is far in the future, Asia will one day be able to challenge Western dominance if it continues to proper the way it has been currently.

As for my last commentary, I find Heinlein's reflectioons on the state of US Intelligence to be quite amusing especially in light of recent events. On page 17 of the paperback, Heinlein states," A rediculously inadequate militarry intelligence had been the prime characteristic asa power all through its history.The most powerful nation the globe had ever seen-but it had stumbled into wars like a blind giant."

My how little things change. Heinlein was quite the astute observer of history.

Heros and Villians in All Races Within This Book

Robert always writes an entertaining story. However, this one is unusual in the fact that he did not start this story. He did finish it. His story is basic: another country takes over America through limited nuclear strikes, mass invasion, and complete surprize. A small research lab in the rockies developes a "super" weapon and the people use a "unique" plan to retake America.
The charge of racism is false. He has white villians and asian heros and asian villians and white heros. The key element to understand is that he shows the cultural difference from American to China/Japan. His cultural ideas come from a well traveled and educated individual, himself. If you look at the world today, we see a growing threat from China, and a culture that scorns human life (forced abortions, mass killings, mass imprisonments for political reasons, mass slavery, etc.). Therefore, Robert did not present a book that hides, lies, nor denies differences. He shows differences in culture and attitude based on fact, not world politics, or racist hatred. He makes it clear that these are NOT racist but cultural differences. A point in fact, one hero he has in the book is an American of asian ancestry (his parents/grandparents are from an asian country). This hero gives his life to stop a mad white man who was about to destroy the headquarters of the American Army (what remained). The weapons and technology did not ONLY KILL asians, the technology could kill anyone or everyone depending on the settings. The technology also could be used to heal, transmute, and protect.
Overall, a good book but not a "normal" Heinlien book.

And Now for Something Completely Different....

I found Elaine Morgan's "The Descent of Woman" to provide some highly interesting concepts to think about, and I have no doubt that her outsider "alternative" view of evolution caused a considerable uproar in the scientific community when the book was first published in 1972.
At the core of Morgan's theory is the idea that women played an equal (or possibly superior) role in human evolution, and were NOT just submissive second-class childbearers while the "strong and brave hunter men" ("Tarzanists") were shaping the evolution of the species. In presenting her case, Morgan draws heavily on the Aquatic Ape Theory (first presented by Sir Alister Hardy in the 1920's) for explanations of how humans moved from the trees to walking upright, how they became hairless, the development of speech, and the physiological factors that make us radically different from other primates.
The book doesn't portray the male half of humanity in a very favorable light-- which, in itself, I don't really have a problem with. However, the tone of the writing sometimes crosses the line from scientific to slightly condescending and "preachy," and in doing so, the work perhaps loses a bit of credibility from a scientific standpoint-- almost as if the author couldn't quite decide between "Science" and "Feminism." Nonetheless, Morgan should be commended for questioning male-centric evolutionary theories put forth by a historically male-dominated scientific community, and readers should not lose sight of the fact that she is more of an "outsider" than a member of the "establishment."
I am not sure if the designation "Classic Study of Evolution" is deserved-- the core CONCEPTS were somewhat revolutionary at the original time of publishing, but the actual presentation tastes more of "pseudoscience" than hard science. At the end of the book, I felt that I had been presented with a very interesting (and plausible) POSSIBILITY, but without being CONVINCED that This Is How It Is. That, of course, is just my OPINION-- I am not a scientist.
Overall rating: Recommended (7 bookmarks out of a possible 10). Women readers will feel good/vindicated; open-minded men will hopefully feel somewhat enlightened. The writing style is eloquent, at times humorous, at times somewhat dry and scholarly. A well-developed is vocabulary recommended!

has some problems

I really haven't paid any attention to evolutionary debates and whether the Aquatic Ape Theory is accepted or debunked or whether something else has risen to takes its place. However, I am left with the impression that the author has constructed a straw man to argue against and some of her claims and lines of argument are bothersome. She makes several claims that I am pretty sure are false: that only humans aggress against other humans, that only humans rape, that only humans have homosexuality and that this is because of the "lack of aim" engendered by the movement of the vagina. In her discussion of orgasm she is curiously silent on how other aquatic mammals deal with this movement of the vagina -- despite using them to bolster her argument in almost every other area. She makes the point that male primates don't initiate sex unless the female gives off certain signals but then later on claims that it was only male's continued rape in the absence of these signals that kept the human race going. She seems to want to have it both ways. Also her arguments about the rise of face-to-face sex don't address the fact that humans are still capable of performing in a variety of other positions when they feel like it with no apparent affect on rates of procreation.
In short, I think the first few chapters of her book are interesting and intriguing. Once she hits the chapters of orgasm and love I began to feel less convinced by her arguments. On the whole it was not an entirely convincing book because of the straw man feel she gives to her opponents but she certainly advances an interesting idea.

More difinitive than Desmond Morris "The Naked Ape"

In 1980 I bought this book thinking it was a feminist tract but once I began to read I was entranced and thoroughly enjoyed her writing. Her "new" theory of evolution began with her reading of Morris' book and his mention of Sir Alister Hardy's idea that somewhere along the line our ancestors spent a great deal of time in an aquatic environment. I had read that information in Desmond's book but unlike Ms. Morgan, I didn't put much weight on it until I read her book. She covers every facet of evolution that no one can explain by "Man the Great Hunter" theory. Her explaination of everything from our nose (so different than the other "great apes") to our power of speech (do hunters really yell while they are stalking prey?) are covered in this book. I highly recommend this book (The Descent of Woman) even if you aren't into anthropology because Elaine Morgan is a witty and thorough writer. Her next book, "The Aquatic Ape", covers the response to "The Descent of Woman" but it's out of print.I wish they would re-issue the second book (The Aquatic Ape) because in it professionals in various disciplines (geology, biology, anthropology, etc.) found places that could have been the origination of our very aquatic species.

The Ugly Side of American Culture

Why Can't I Use a Smiley Face is a collection of short essays describing episodes from Roosh's temporary return to the US from Eastern Europe. With his characteristic unapologetic honesty and sharp humor, Roosh lets us witness irreversible changes one experiences when living abroad as he describes his interactions with family, friends, readers and girls happening during his monthly stay.

The title of the book speaks to the effects of the forces contemporary American culture exerts upon men. Why Can't I Use a Smiley Face is a vivid account of a male experience in America that will be of high value to both Americans who wish to challenge their taken-for-granted assumptions about local women and femininity and foreigners who haven't been introduced to this side of American culture.

The entire collection of essays comes down to the idea that men in America are devalued and objectified in the form of being seen as "no more than vessels for short-term sexual pleasure" (p.1) while stressing on corresponding devastating changes women endure. As a newcomer from Eastern Europe, I found the descriptions in the book to be amazingly accurate. Many of them are so typical that they could have been written by any guy who set his foot in an American bar.

Roosh managed to cover a plethora of key elements that make American culture hostile to men:

There is a general lack of ways a man in America can express sexual interest. Masculinity is suppressed by the redefinition of traditional courting as weakness without many alternatives to substitute it. Expressing interest is seen as unnatural, giving rise to different 'techniques' or 'game', (i.e. an attempt of American men to seduce women by pretending they are not doing so):

"Being flirty with an American can be risky, especially if she construes that you're falling in love with her. I didn't want her to get "creeped out" by real affection." (p. 20).

In particular, compliments are viewed as weakness in America unlike in Eastern Europe where they are seen as a socially acceptable way of expressing interest:

"I accidentally defaulted to my European game by giving a unique compliment about her hair and then easing into a conversation where the goal was to charm he pants off. But I wasn't in Europe and by the time I realized that, I lost her." (p. 45)

In contrast to Eastern Europe, women and men do not have a natural interest in each other, making it impossible to develop a conversation based on your true self:

"It was going down like a Lithuanian or Ukrainian pickup. The lead time was slow, but the attraction was being built based on my experiences and knowledge instead of my ability to make her horny with cocky statements." (p. 59).

Women have little interest in men and don't put any effort into conversations (p.16)

American women are repulsed by the very idea of having a family life. (p. 17):

"Roosh: "Putting kids in daycare isn't family at all."
American woman: "So you think a woman should stay home like a slave?""

Sex means nothing in America. A womanizer in Eastern Europe would have to pretend that he wants a relationship to get sex. After he gets it, he would often have to face the girl crying after she realizes relationship wasn't his true goal. In America, it is women who are using men like sex objects:

"After cleaning up, before my heartbeat had even a chance to settle, she said, "You don't have to stay."" (p. 21). [...] "I told her how things were in Europe, where some girls fell in love after sex. "I don't want a relationship," she said, abruptly." (p. 22)

In Eastern Europe, bad boys get lots of sex and nice guys enter monogamous relationships, but in America, nice guys don't get anything. The culture forces you to become a cold-blooded misogynist jerk if you want to succeed with women (if "success" and "women" are applicable words here):

"During the meetup, with the dozens of times "Poland" left the lips of men, I realized what it represented: the past. Poland is a place where nice guys can still get the girl." (p. 45)

Roosh also covers other vices of America including the "cougar phenomenon" (p. 49), girls using vulgarity (p. 51) and physical force (p.52) as well as obesity combined with a bad attitude (p. 56-57).

Roosh brutally exposes the worst of American women. Just read the book to understand the challenges men are facing; to get an idea what it feels like when you enter a club only to realize that there are no attractive women (who are unattractive not due to their genetics but by choice and as a result of social engineering); to feel the depth of the decay that allows even the most mediocre women get the level of attention that isn't close to anything you've ever seen; to get a grasp of the world where girls do not give eye contact, smile, blush and giggle but try to avoid men at all costs (unless men serve their selfish goals); to look into the eyes of the vampire that will suck out your confidence and kill a man inside you.

Roosh left America with no definite plan of return, unhappy with what his country has become.

America the barren?

Roosh has an approach to writing about his life that is at once clinical, self-reflective, funny, critical and--one just does not expect this--philosophical. In his latest, he returns to the country of his birth and ultimately find us wanting; but I'm jumping ahead of myself.
The book is a series of vignettes documenting his return to visit friends and family after years away. Each chapter describes occurrences on this journey and reads very much like an quirky, independent movie so much so you will think you were at your local art house cinema drinking a Belgian lager and watching a cool guy make his unconventional way through life.
As he describes what's happening, Roosh deadpans his observations like a movie voice-over. He writes with a detachment that is at first startling but ultimately refreshing and makes me think he may be reproducing for us what happened in his mind real-time as it was actually happening.
As you read, you stumble across various pronouncements about the human condition from a man who will, in his lifetime, meet more different people in two years than most ever will in a lifetime. He is frank, quite brutally frank actually, about sex. He is brutally frank also about the female of the species, genus Americanensis. Here, for example, he describes how many men it takes to turn a woman into a ruthless entitlement mare:

`I estimate that it takes ten male partners for a woman to start realizing that she doesn't "need" a man. Any man who dates her after that will get half-assed relationship efforts and increased entitlement. She knows how easy it is to get [a man] that, though maybe not as good as yours, will validate her nonetheless.'

Since 10 is quite a low number in modern America, if one accepts his assertion it is no leap of the imagination to see where things have gone. And every other story he tells of meeting women in DC seems to bear this out.
Especially funny is the story of the female lawyer who cannot understand the psycho-dynamics of reality and asks--no demands--attention. On his metaphorical feet as usual, Roosh turns ice cold and decides to see just how far he can push the interaction. And like the damaged spirit that she is, unrecognizing, blind, she stumbles unfeeling towards eventual cat-owning obsolescence. No way a normal person could absorb this every weekend and emerge unscathed. Roosh seems to shake his head, clarity prevails: I'm back in the United States.
More than the travails of random encounters with tigresses is Roosh's interactions with his mother and sister. It seems he'd thought they were supportive of his lifestyle, but something about their XX chromosomes had since taken over and produced arguments against his choices, and it seems to find him taken aback. "In my own house, too?"
What I like most about Roosh's writing is the philosophical calmness with which he writes, how he describes the process of levelling counter-arguments without emotional outburst especially considering he's "arguing" with those he loves about a way of life he has come to love. One can be forgiven for thinking it a writer's low trick, made to show how cool under fire he is, but watch his videos and you can sense this is how he is regardless of the circumstance. It is no leap to connect this person with his writing persona and sense the veracity of itl.
Methodically, he rips apart mom's reasoning so that, by the end, she is making what I feel is the painful demand that either he change or he stop communicating with her. This couldn't have been an easy thing to write about, but it is invaluable to anyone thinking of hoeing this road. This is what may and likely will happen to you: even your own family will disapprove of your jumping the society-lain train tracks.
Another family story, this time of dad. Seeking perhaps to understand himself further, he meets up with his father over a weekend's gambling in Atlantic City and coaxes from him the apparent genetic source of Roosh's "talents," shall we say. Dad was a "player" back before it became codified, before it became popular. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
Underlying all this and forming a backbone of his new book is the world-weariness: he's half-expecting something new, please surprise me. Perhaps in the two years I've been away, he begs, please be different. But he only finds more of the same and even worse. It is a jungle of the heart and the cougars are winning: you can play with a tame lion, but those claws, those claws, those claws. The title of the book comes from a tryst with a woman who coldly dispatches him from her bed, and in a moment of vulnerability, he leaves a note and discusses with himself how best to convey that a human experience between them has occurred instead of a steel bare transaction: perhaps a smiley face? She never calls back.
And so, as he departs (sister no longer cries at the airport) he comes to the conclusion that America is the land of the barren of soul. He no longer recognizes it and thus leaves its shores, a stranger. I wonder what that means for the men who are left behind. I ponder this question and my soul freezes at its outer edges.

Only for niche audience

Story of the author becoming an expat through a series of offputting encounters with women in DC over the period of a month. For those that aren't familiar with his work, he is a life-long student of the art of seduction, though this book is not about instruction.

I'm usually a fan of Roosh lit, but this seemed to be more for the author than for his audience. "I'm a man of the world!" he exclaims at one point, disappointed with his (lack of) reception by DC women. I get it; it's easier to pick up women abroad as a traveled American -- I think most people knew that before opening the cover. American women are superficial and unfeminine -- again, no surprises here. When a guy that spends his professional life traveling the world, racking up "bangs," comes back to the country that largely represents his readership to complain about its women it mostly just comes off as trite and petulant.

I took issue with the inclusion of typos that made it feel unprofessional, also extrapolating opinions about an entire culture based on experiences with ONE city ONLY at night venues within a period of ONE month was just over the top. I don't have trouble meeting feminine or interesting women in the US and I'm not even a PUA. The old Roosh from "Dead Bat" was a pioneer and innovator, but this one seems entitled and lazy, especially in his writing. During the moments where he enjoys his modicum of US notoriety as a professional author before arriving at his big decision at the end, I couldn't help but wondering if he is finally a victim of his own Kool-Aid.

Overall fairly disapopinted with the product and probably not a future supporter of the new lifestyle abroad if this represents the final evolution of Roosh. It is worth picking up, however, if you've read any of his memoirs esp "Dead Bat" to see where the journey has ended. It also includes some characteristically amusing anecdotes though they seem laced with bitterness moreso than previous accounts.

“Your book Managing, Controlling, and Improving Quality worked out very well in my senior-level class in the past fall semester. Actually students really liked the book. I planned to cover a little bit of acceptance sampling plans but I didn’t have sufficient time. I did cover Chapter 9 Reliability though. It was a great mix of managing aspects of quality, tools and techniques of quality control and design of experiments, plus a little bit of reliability. Students were happy and I was also happy. We will keep using this book which is ideal for my class.”

I am a college professor of Industrial Engineering and this book was used in my junior-level quality engineering course in the fall semester of 2010. It turned out that my students were very happy with the book. I think this is an exellent book. It presents an organized approach to quality management, control, and improvement. This book was written at an introductory level easily read by engineers, scienctists, and quality professionals. I believe that the material can also be selectively and profitably applied by instructors or practitioners with basic statistical experience. One of the authors, Douglas Montgomery, has a unique ability to explain complex issues in plain English and with persuative graphics. This book is visually appealing and the index is extensive, making it easy to find topics and to use the book as a textbook or a reference. To sum up, given the topics that are covered, the particular methods used to confront the problems presented, and the ease with which these methods may be implemented, this incomparable volume has important theoretical underpinnings and a depth of discussion that is seldom found in similar books. This book is destined to remain the definitive textbook for undergraduate students in business, engineering or management or a reference on quality management/engineering for many years to come. I do recommend this outstanding book over all others.

NEVER BUY THIS BOOK

Okay, I currently use this book for my QA class in college.

This book symbolizes the epitome of lack of Quality.
Countless errors and omission of important concepts in the book make this book unbearable to read.

They expect you to know a formula without them giving it to us.

I am personally ashamed of my prof. choosing this book as our textbook.

This book is riddled with errors. There are typos on nearly every page, including within some of the formulas. Many of the example problems also have mistakes in them. This is the most unprofessionally produced textbook I've ever seen. This book is barely worth the cost of shipping. Do not purchase it if you have any other option.
