About the Author
Jim Bigelow, Ph.D., has led a diverse professional life as a professor, therapist, clergyman and author. He earned his doctorate in psychology at Claremont Graduate School and served as a Professor of Psychology at Whittier College. He has also lectured abroad extensively and pastored several Evangelical churches. Jim founded UNCIRC and has served on the board of directors for NORM. He is the father of two grown children and lives with his wife in California.

The scandal of circumcision & how to regrow the foreskin.

The shocking story of male circumcision, a must-read for every man, expectant couple, pregnant woman, and anyone contemplating circumcising their boy, either as an infant or at an older age. Discusses alternatives to full circumcision for medical conditions (phimosis, tight foreskin) and details the loss of sensation and other important functions of the foreskin. Opened my eyes to the reality of regrowing my own prepuce. I have regrown about 1/2 inch and regained some lost sensation using the do-it-yourself techniques in this excellent book.

Excellent and thought-provoking!

The authors present the unvarnished truth about one of America's ugliest human rights abuses, infant circumcision. They also describe how circumcised men can to some extent recover what was taken from them. Particularly helpful: This thoroughly researched book includes well-written explanations, and an excellent indexes of resources and references. The author's description of the historical development of the practice of circumcision is both enlightening and shocking.

This is a Great Book!

Dr. Bigelow is able to succinctly reveal why circumcision is a hoax perpetuated on the American people. He also tells why the foreskin is an important, functional part of male anatomy. What sets this book apart, however, are the personal comments throughout it that really show how men in this country have been victimized by the medical profession and society. It's time to save our sons from the same abuse that the majority of American Men have endured. Our sons deserve to grow up intact just as much as our daughters do. There is no medical reason for circumcision. America is the only industrialized nation that still routinely circumcises, yet just about every aliment attributed to having a foreskin is lower or no higher in all of the industrialized countries that don't circumcise. For example, America has one of the highest HIV rates in the industrialized world. Circumcision has done nothing to stem the tide of HIV infection in this country. In fact, some studies show that circumcised men are at greater risk of contracting HIV. And, since the circumcised penis becomes keratinized and rough, it's probable that they are at greater risk for infecting others.
Dr. Bigelow's book is wonderful both in its factual documentation of circumcision and in its personalization of the horror of circumcision. It's a must read for every man that has been circumcised, to realize what he's lost, and for every man that has not been circumcised, to realize how lucky he is. It is also a must read for women. It will help them to understand the hurt that most men in this country have suffered at the hands of the medical establishment and society. It will also help them to realize how lucky they are if they are fortunate enough to have an uncircumcised lover. Just a thought; the crime rate in this country increased almost lock-step with the circumcision rate. Now the circumcision rate is going down and so is the crime rate. I wonder if it's just a coincidence, or if crime is some how related to the violence most males experience just after birth.

A humorous novel about English fox-hunting in the 19th century with a plethora of characters who display between all the faults of character of mankind that one still finds today, albeit the faults could be perceived as much more charming in a 19th century rural England setting

Robert Smith Surtees devoted his life basically to two things: fox hunting and novel writing, actually combining both into a single pursuit. He wrote a number of delightful novels centering around the fox-hunting society in and about Durham, England; this was his last book, published posthumously, and among his best. Facey Romford is a confidence trickster who passes himself off as his wealthy namesake, using the other's stationery to pull off the switch. He becomes Master of the Hounds of the Heavyside Hunt, and from that vantage point we are privy to all kinds of characters and happenings. The novel ends with Facey and his new bride going to Australia, not in disgrace, as was hoped by all who knew him, but where his fortunes only increase and all is well. Surtees's humor is broad and ruthless, and his observations on what makes this society tick are keen and perceptive. The novel presents an entertaining look at the sporting side of Victorian England.

Fresh Look At A Common Subject!

When you are in need of healing, there is nothing more rewarding than picking up compilations of healing scriptures that fit your specific needs. For years, I would search the web, thumb through the concordance and a wide ranges of books containing healing prayers and topical scripture lists.

In his book, God’s Healing Scriptures: The Promise and Examples of Healing in the Bible, author Akili Kumasi introduces readers to a unique compilation and organization of healing scriptures and instructions that will complement, enhance or even replace your existing study methods and meditation.

The overall premise of the book is simple, “God is YOUR healer. God is THE healer.” Through the first few pages of the book, Kumasi lays a foundation concerning the necessity of studying God’s word as it relates to healing in the Old & New Testaments. This is very helpful for those who have limited understanding of healing or who may have been taught that healing is not relevant for today.

God’s Healing Scriptures: The Promise and Examples of Healing in the Bible is compiled in a way that:

(1) Introduces readers to God’s healing promises. Kumasi introduces the concept of healing simply by expounding on one key passage of scripture from Exodus 15:16 which says, “…I am the God that healeth thee.” The study builds on this foundation the foundation for the remainder of the book. Here, readers will discover a treasure trove of scriptures organized from the Old Testament and then the New Testament.

(2) Shares numerous scriptural examples of biblical healings. Kumasi combs through the bible and extensively details testimonies of divine healings again from the Old and New Testaments. An interesting twist here is that he also includes scriptures in which people did not receive healing for the purpose of seeing the connection of certain healings with health practices. This approach, as I see it, allows readers to take in what God has done, see their own responsibility in their healing process and, perhaps, establish hope in what he is still doing in the lives of people. These stories are presented without commentary or additional text. As a result, it is clear that the reader will have to decide what they believe.

Overall, God’s Healing Scriptures: The Promise and Examples of Healing in the Bible, provides a strong resource for organized bible study on the healing power of God. It is structured in a way that would also strengthen prayer and daily meditation. In my opinion, the most unique component of this book is that it includes so many biblical examples of God’s healing power not just a list of uncategorized scriptures and techniques on prayer and study. A new believer as well as a seasoned one would find value between these pages. In addition, this book will also save a diligent student hours in research on this subject.

Great read! Very encouraging!

This book is very insightful! I was highly encouraged and reminded that so many people suffer today and even back before Jesus was alive, whether it is with physical ailments, or mental troubles. This encouraged me because I know that I am not alone when I suffer. Most of the time we do not know why we suffer, and we are always looking for a reason. What I think most people want is a definitive answer, when in reality, if we do not "see" an answer to our prayers, we think God wasn't listening or prayer didn't work. This book is full of insight as to why this happens. It has encouraged me to be a better person and realize that I cannot just sit and wait for something to happen. Things will happen, but I still need to work. I need to do things, even if they are little; nothing happens when we just sit around and wait.

Today, most people think the only way to be healed is to use medication and synthetic treatments. What I mean is anything that did not come from nature in which God created. Even when God healed through Jesus, people saw and still did not believe. They still thought that healing had to be done a different way. This book gives great insight into many different Bible verses about such healing, some of which I would have never read on my own and some which I have heard before. Even with the verses I knew, reading them again in this book has encouraged me to be a better believer.

And there are many things that talk about people being risen from the dead. Such as page 69 - 70 referring to II Kings 13:14, 21 about a dead man revived in Elisha's Tomb. As you see it wasn't just Lazarus being risen from the dead that most people hear about. Or even about Job on page 75 who was very troubled because bad things kept happening to him as he lost his friends and family. Job was faithful and even prayed for his friends and was restored himself.

It's a great read! I really encourage others to get a copy!

Most certainly not, for God can and does do what man calls impossible. What a great book that has been written with the healing scriptures put together in a concise manner. We all need to study God's Word and learn life's lessons. This book is very valuable in today's world and a welcomed addition to your library. Because God never changes. He was the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. I really enjoyed you book and look forward to more in the future.

And old hand at this...

I've been keeping freshwater fish (and just about everything else that ever tooled about the freshwater environment at one time or another) for a long, LONG time, and I've found this text to be as authoritative and reader-friendly as books can get. Simply stated, the novice can learn all he or she needs to about a species or genera of fish in order to successfully keep that species in captivity, while the advanced hobbyist has at his or her fingers an unparalleled resource text in this book. As an expert whose knowledge is certainly limited, I've found this book to be a sort of catch-all text that answers most any question I might have about the freshwater species of fishes. More so even than that, I consider this book a reference text in that when I go to the local fish shop and I see something I've never seen before, I can come home, reference my Encyclopedia of Freshwater Fishes, and come away with a solid understanding of the species that I just encountered for the first time; I don't have to rely on the "guess and pray" information given me by the pet shop's clerk, I can simply rely on this book to fill in the gaps and bridge the information-gulfs that stand between me and my chosen species of captive fish.

While the above information is simply my amateur opinion on the information the text provides, the following is my professional take on the book as published work. My name is Phil Purser, and many of you may have read my books on Moray Eels, Green Treefrogs, or Garter & Ribbon Snakes. I've been writing on fish & reptiles/amphibians for over a half-decade, and I know what is good and what sucks when it comes to the pet trade. I've read myriad books by "authors" who couldn't find their noses in the dark, and I've read authoritative books by the leading minds of the field, and I can honestly say that, after reading this book from the front cover to the back, this text is one book that will stay one my personal shelves for years and years to come. The information in it is up-to-date, accurate, and timeless (of course nomenclature can change, but the care of each species is pretty well fixed). When you've got all the information you'll ever need in one book, why would you ever reach for another?

The authors of this book are some of the best in the field...better even than myself. Despite my decades of experience studying and writing about fishes, I still defer my questions and inquiries to men such as Glen Axelrod and Brian Scott. Any hobbyist who keeps his or her fingers on the pulse of the freshwater aquarium hobby will attest to the expertise of these scholars; they know their stuff!

I guess what I'm saying is that if an old expert like me can enjoy and reference a book so much as I have this text, then ANYONE who is even remotely interested in the keeping and understanding of freshwater fishes can certianly learn from and relish a book like this one. I honestly believe that a book to rival this one in scope and depth of knowledge will be written for a long, long time to come.

Disappointing

I wanted one great dictionary for reference as I just got started with my aquarium a few months ago. I found this to be badly indexed, and since it is alphabetical by Latin subspecies and then Latin name within it, they assume a great deal of knowledge right off the bat. Then you need to look up the common name in the index to find the latin name and my most common fish aren't even in there under common name (ie., Molly, Platy). Guppy is under "D" in the index, a typo for "G" - which makes me think this wasn't even proofread. I really didn't need information on freshwater fish like bass and pike, since those aren't aquarium fish, so don't understand who the audience is supposed to be. Many fish in here measure over a foot in length. I have an aquarium, I'm not going fishing.

Best in a long time

I've been anticipating the release of this text for a while, and, now that I own a copy of it, I can say without reservation that it is one of the best encyclopedias to freshwater fosh that I own; and I own MANY such texts. In the old days of fish books, the publisher would simply recycle old information and slap a new cover on it in order to sell it as a "new" title. This book breaks that mold. It's authored by renowned fish experts Axelrod & Scott, and the range of information it provides is AWESOME!! Most books on this topic give scant coverage to a broad range of species, but this text gives you a double-handful of information on a LOT of species. Everything fro Bichirs to Cichlids, from Characins to Corydorias, from Poecilidae to... You name it, it's here!

The point is, this book is a solid text from cover to cover. It has a few typos in it but, hell, I just read Stephen King's latest book and I found more than a few grammar mistakes in it, too. So anyone who is a devout fish hobbyist, and who can overlook one or two grammatical mistakes, will definitely be patting themselves on the back for purchasing this book. In the few weeks that I've owned it, I've already used it as reference material more than all my other fish books combined. You cannot go wrong with this atlas of freshwater fishes.

This disarming man...

"Things a Little Bird Told Me" is not your average business book. I see it more as a creative memoir of Biz's life and times. He was one of the four original co-founders of Twitter (Evan, Jack, and Noah were the others). Biz starts by taking us through his somewhat surreal initial hiring at Google (helped by Evan, who became a close friend), then his jumping ship to Evan's new startup Odeo, and then the birth of Twitter, which began as a two-week hackathon project by Jack and Biz, believe it or not!

There are so many great stories in the book. Biz seems like an unusual character, a self-deprecating "chancer" who bounces quickly from failure to success and is not ashamed to open up about his missteps. He comes off as sunny and warm and willing to look like a fool at times. The story of Ev and Biz driving down to Palo Alto to see Mark Zuckerberg is an awkward classic. (What must Zuckerberg have heard about these guys to have treated them like such morons? One wonders.)

Biz, to me, seems like he has ADHD. He proudly tells the tale of his "No Homework Policy" in high school, for example, where he simply gave up doing it because it took him too long. (The mind boggles. Who could get away with that? Well, someone who doesn't play by the rules and doesn't see the point of structure.) Biz's openness is very nice, but there is a shadow behind this book and that shadow is Nick Bilton's very much darker account of the founding of Twitter, with its quasi-Shakesperean theme of friendships betrayed.

I will admit that I haven't read Bilton's book yet, but I really want to after reading Biz's side of the story. What bothered me most in Biz's account was how he gave Noah Glass short shrift. Noah actually came up with the name "Twitter," but Biz presents it as an almost random incident in the book. Biz's friendship with Jack Dorsey raises some questions as well. Biz spins everything positively but can't quite cover the ouster of Evan Williams as CEO by the Twitter board without giving away what a painful and disillusioning episode this was.

The book shone for me when Biz was talking about how he envisaged Twitter as a collaborative force for good and strove to keep Twitter neutral and nonpartisan, letting the users determine new features. I love using Twitter and, because it has brought so much to my own life, I appreciate where he's coming from. I only hope that Twitter can stay relatively noncommercial as the company continues under a new administration.

So, I give it four stars because I feel that the account of the dynamics between the founders was somewhat self-serving. On the other hand, I didn't have a dull moment reading it. It was an interesting look into the mind of a creative force who is a genius at creating opportunities for himself!

Autobiographic and self-serving account of Stone's career

Things a Little Bird Told Me is an autobiographical account by Biz Stone of his life, focusing on his professional career. Stone is best known as one of the founders of Twitter. He indicates that he began his work career as a graphic artist after dropping out of college. He became acquainted with Evan Williams over the Internet and Williams, who was then working at Google, convinced him to work there as well. After a brief stint at Google he left with Williams when the latter buys Odeo which includes Twitter and the site grows exponentially. But he leaves after his friend Evan is fired as CEO and now has started a new company called “Jelly” which in a mobile app that allows people to ask questions and get answers from real people.

Throughout the book Stone drops small gems of personal wisdom such as the idea that constraint inspires creativity (Twitter is limited to 140 words), be willing to take risks to succeed, be optimistic and trust your instincts, know what you want and believe in your ability to get it. Also he advises that you do not follow rules and conventions blindly as he clearly did not. Stone comes across as egotistical and self-serving, referring to himself as a “genius” and always coming off as the good guy who tries to make everyone happy. At the end he talks about how good people are and that he wants to help people. Twitter he says put people first and technology second, whereas Google does the reverse.

Some of his stories about himself are poignant such as how as a small boy he overcame his fear of the dark by intentionally going into a room with the lights off to see if any monsters would attack him. When none did he says he lost his fear of the dark. The message is “to seek knowledge even in the face of fear.”

This book will be of interest to people who are interested in Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and technology. It is relatively short and can be easily read in a few hours. It is clearly not on the level of Walter Isaacson’s biography of Steve Jobs. Readers may also want to read Hatching Twitter by Nick Bilto, which covers the creation of the company from another perspective.

Inspiring, Insightful, and Well-Written

THINGS A LITTLE BIRD TOLD ME by Biz Stone has done two things for me: left me inspired, and convinced me that Mr. Stone is a nice, cool, and interesting guy. In fact, reading this book reminded me of Chris Hadfield’s AN ASTRONAUT'S GUIDE TO LIFE ON EARTH. Through determination, mental projection, and a bit of luck, amazing things can happen. Or, so we are lead to believe.

This book goes through the life of Biz Stone from the time he was living in his mom’s basement with his girlfriend, tens of thousands of dollars in debt, and on to the time where Twitter is valued at fifteen billion dollars. Much of what Stone writes is vastly quotable as he relates his optimistic vision of himself and those around him. For instance, Stone says that “failures become our assets” and relates to how Twitter’s down time and the display of the “Fail Whale” actually helped Twitter grow stronger.

Stone endeavors to show how he is relatable to the Everyday Joe. He describes how his family lives modestly; how he programmed the company of Twitter to have a moral compass; and, how he can relate almost any life occurrence to an episode of Star Trek. From what we read here, he is inspiring and funny.

This book is filled with interesting stories, such as: the joke offer to sell Twitter to Mark Zuckerberg for five-hundred million dollars; the major event SXSW 2007 turned out to be; the Moldova unrest; and the plane landing in the Hudson River. Of particular interest is how Twitter got involved in the Presidential Elections with Obama and how Stone was steadfast in his resolve to remain unbiased, especially when NSA’s PRISM was seeking user data.

Some of Stone’s advice may seem excessively daring or foolhardy. He shows that high risk does have the potential of high reward, but the reader doesn’t get a glimpse into other peoples’ lives that weren’t so lucky. Malcom Gladwell relates this same type of hard-work and success in his book OUTLIERS with the examples of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. Being at the right place at the right time has its benefits, too. (As an aside, Stone mentions Gladwell directly in this book as a point of contention.) Still, Stone gives some concession in his closing remarks, encouraging readers to perhaps alter their course versus jumping into the chasm blindly.

The bottom line: this is an exciting book. Stone is readable, quotable, and fun. He has his quirks, but that’s what gives this book its life.

The Oregon is a 500-foot-long cargo steamer with a state-of-the-art communications and command center and a helicopter. The group's mission is to pick up a meteorite and deliver it to the CIA. It might be made of iridium, and iridium can be used to construct a "dirty bomb." Muslim terrorists who have stolen a nuclear device may use the radioactive material in the meteorite to vaporize a large Western city. Another group, led by a demented industrialist, seeks to destroy the Islamic world. As always, the plot covers many locales around the world, and the dialogue contains lots of military jargon. The large cast of characters includes Elton John and Eric the Red (yes, the legendary explorer). Even though the good guys always win, Cussler fans will remain engaged. George Cohen
