Derek Fell is an art historian, garden photographer, and author with almost one million copies of his books in print, including SECRETS OF MONET'S GARDEN, CEZANNE'S GARDEN, and the award-winning VAN GOGH'S GARDEN. He lives on a historic farm in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

Indeed, this book is not well written. It reads like a college term paper, with attendant deficits in argument development, source citation, etc. There are huge amounts of speculation with little or no evidence to support them. It also loses its focus; although ostensibly about relationships with women, the book devolves into a loose biography of van Gogh's life.
Having said all of this, there are worthwhile portions of the book. I enjoyed knowing about his strong family history of psychiatric illness, and of his seemingly endless capacity to engage in doomed relationships. I wondered about van Gogh's diagnosis: bipolar, borderline personality disorder, neurosyphillis, lead toxicity, all of the above? There was enough here to stimulate some thought.
This book is worth a brief skim, at the library, but should be complemented by a more authoritative biography if you are more interested in fact than speculation.

Excellent book for anyone interested in history, art and a good story

Vincent Van Gogh shot himself in the stomach on a scorching day atop a yellow wheat-covered hillside outside of Auvers, France on July 27, 1890. It took him hours to drag himself the short distance to his rented room above a cafe on the main street of the village, where he curled up in his bed in agony. When he was discovered later that evening by the proprietor, bleeding and moaning, his brother, benefactor, and best friend, Theo, was sent for. Theo arrived from Paris in the morning, and called in the opinion of a second doctor. It was decided that an attempt should not be made to remove the bullet, and that they should not risk moving Vincent to the hospital. Vincent languished for a day longer in his tiny attic room in the stifling heat with his brother by his side. When Vincent died at the age of 37 the next morning, he left a bereaved Theo, thousands of paintings and sketches from his 10 year art career, and hundreds of very articulate letters to his siblings, parents and friends chronicling his life and work. In fact close to 900 of his letters and 2200 of his artworks are on the internet and available to view at [...] (It is interesting to note that Vincent only ever sold one of his paintings by the end of his life.) It was the letters Vincent left behind that allowed a window into his soul, as well as the basis for the research into this book. Derek Fell did an excellent job of combining the letters, along with previous biographies and evaluations from prominent psychiatrists to provide a deeper understanding of Vincent and the tortured life he led.
The interesting thing about "Van Gogh's Women" is that it elevates Vincent's life above the label of lunatic artist, and allows the reader to see him in a sympathetic new light. When one understands his history; the dynamics of the family he grew up in, the other careers he tried, the continuous struggles he endured financially, emotionally, and professionally to improve his painting and find his niche in the art world, and the failed relationships in his life that were intrinsic to his happiness, one begins to understand the man and why his life ended so tragically.
From the very beginning Vincent was born into misery. He was the second child his parents sired, the first a stillborn son. Vincent's mother became pregnant with him just three months later, and named Vincent after his dead brother. Vincent was thereafter the replacement child who could never live up to his parents unrealistic expectations, or be loved in his own right. Although Vincent eventually had 5 other siblings, his mother was chronically depressed over the loss of her first child. In addition, Vincent's father was a pastor with strict authoritarian ideals. Vincent yearned for the love he never received from his parents, and throughout his life entered into 5 significant relationships with women craving the stability of matrimonial bliss. It was never to be. As well, Vincent cultivated strong emotional bonds with a few men friends. Some of these relationships also ended. With the demise of each relationship Vincent experienced excruciating emotional pain and sometimes punished himself physically in his disappointment. The author puts forward the idea with convincing evidence that Vincent didn't actually intend to kill himself, but was instead only punishing himself once again. In the end one is haunted by the thought that with the genius and intellect of Van Gogh, his story might have had a happy ending given the support of a loving family.
This was an excellent book for anyone interested in history, art, and a good story. Derek Fell has written several other books about Impressionist artists, all of which I am going to look for.
