Perfectly eloquent approach to a complex subject!

Neprology is probably one of the most complex and "weakest" subject for residents and medical students. The authors and editor of this book have not only made the subject palatable, but enjoyable. Beginning with a historical approach, was a fantastic idea; it set the perfect stage to illustrate and explain the anatomy, the physiology, the pathophysiology and finally the treatments of renal function and dysfunction.
Moreover, the book does a fine job of explaining acid base disorders, electrolyte disorders, and other renal diseases as they relate to nephrology; as well as their relationship to other subspecialties, such as pulmonology, cardiology and endocrinology for example.

Simply said, the book is a wonderful example of applying creative writing skills to describe a technical subject. The result is an enjoyable, easily readable, thorough explanation of renal function and disease that is written at a perfect level for medical residents, (or anyone else for that matter).

Excellent Resource

This book is the perfect resource for addressing both the gritty physiology, as well as the practical-clinical approach of fluid and electrolytes. I used it mainly to review, at the most basic level, the science behind much routine clinical management, as well as thinking through differential diagnoses and treatments of a variety of electrolyte abnormalities.

thoughtful and sound new edition

this is a very thoughtful book, provided to me when I was in medical school... but an earlier edition. I like the targeted sections, the specific evaluation of edema and its renal consequences.. I might have preferred a better rendering of the various measures for protein loss, and or methods to carefully consider renal function in heart failure...However, some data on these topics is provided, and I am happy to get the clear messages....

About the Author
Barbara Helfgott Hyett's poems have appeared in The Nation, The New Republic, The Massachusetts Review, and many other magazines. A teacher of writing at Boston University, she has edited the memoirs of a Holocaust survivor as well as several anthologies of poems by children.

Wonderful book -- simple yet sophisticated

This is a wonderful book. The author has read the testimonies of Allied soldiers, who had liberated the concentration camps in Europe in WWII. Based on these testimonies, she created a set of vignettes in narrative poem form. Each mini-poem (all less than twenty lines long, with but a few words on each line) captures a thought or an experience. Since the author is recreating the experiences of others, I was worried that the poems would be derivative or schmaltzy. But such is not the case. The poems sound authentic and the voice of the soldiers comes through clearly. The poems are simple, but the ideas behind them quite sophisticated. These poems convey the confusing and painful experiences that the young men felt when confronted with the horrific suffering of Holocaust survivors. The poems deal with revulsion and pity, with fear and guilt, with beauty and horrifying ugliness.

I highly recommend this book both to the general reader and to teachers of classes about the Holocaust. Sections of the book would make good sources for discussion.

Comprehensive Advice for Owners of Fearful Dogs

There are few books out there that assist owners with shy or fearful dogs, which can be one of the most frustrating and heartrenching behaviors for dog owners to deal with. This new book provides a wealth of information - from detailed tips on how to work with a variety of fear issues (noise, objects, thunder, etc.) to suggestions on "alternative" therapies such as using Dog Appeasing Pheramone, homeopathic remedies, Anxiety Wraps, pharmaceutical intervention, and much more. I highly recommend this book to owners of fearful dogs and to dog trainers/shelter workers/rescuers who regularly deal with shy and fearful dogs.

THE book to buy for help with those fearful/shy dogs!

I highly recommend this book! I've been involved with Sheltie Rescue for 12 years, and we rehabilitate puppy mill dogs and unsocialized dogs which are always afraid of anythng and everything. Also, I co-teach a class for shy/fearful dogs at our local Humane Society. This is the first book I have found that covers EVERYTHING needed to know to work with or help these dogs! Plus, it's an easy read and humorous!

It seems ok...

The other reviews gave me such high hopes about this book and maybe my expectations were too high to be honest but I'm not overly impressed so far. There's nothing really wrong with the book but it covers so many subjects that I felt details were skipped that should have been included and still I'm going to struggle to help my dog. The chapters that refer to particular fears are too short and are less about helping to correct the problem than they are about the background to the problem itself. Also the book says it can be read cover to cover or simply used as a reference book by users skipping to relevant chapters. That is not so. Really you need to properly read the first few sections before you skip to the section about your particular problem. Really it's no trouble to read around the subject but why does the book claim to be able to be used in this way??

On the other hand I think her advice is solid and there is certainly useful information in there, particularly if this is the first time you've even thought about trying to help your dog in this way!! I'm absolutely going to give it a go but I wish I had a little more guidance from the book that i purposely bought to offer myself guidance. In this review I want to point out the bad things about the book rather than list all the good things and there are already so many excellent reviews!!

On a side note, I was unimpressed with the author's habit of subtly (you probably won't notice it unless you've read the books by the authors that's she's doubting) belittling other noted dog experts within the book. This was unnecessary and a little petty. Surely most of the people she indirectly belittled are doing good work too and so if Wilde and the other authors are all striving for the same goals, only doing so in different ways, then surely mocking their theories only serves to taint the industry a little bit more.

James Blish ranked Lilith as "one of the great originals," saying that its "allegory is far from obtrusive, and the story proper both tense and decidedly eerie." Bleiler described it as "a long parabolic narrative heavily laden with Victorian Christian symbolism" and noted that critical opinion of the novel was sharply divided: "Some critics regard it highly for its fine images and verbal flashes.”

Lilith, written by the father of fantasy literature, George MacDonald, is considered among the darkest of MacDonald's works, and among the most profound. It is a story concerning the nature of life, death and salvation. Many believe MacDonald is arguing for Christian universalism, or the idea that all will eventually be saved.
