Amy Player came from a good family in Virginia. She attended Christopher Newport University for two years and worked at Busch Gardens in the summers. Pretty, bright, and a talented artist, it's hard to understand how she ended up creating a phony charity and fleecing half the cast of the "Lord of the Rings" film trilogy.

In 2002 Ms. Player created an online fan club in homage to actor Sean Astin and his character, Sam Gamgee. This club caught the eye of Abigail Stone, a fan from Oregon, and the women discovered two mutual interests: an obsession with Astin and the other actors, and the willingness to do or say whatever it took to meet them.

Abbey and Amy developed their fan club into a beautiful, professional-appearing website. They referred to themselves as "Bit of Earth," and claimed that they wanted to raise money "for charity." On September 11, 2002, Amy went to Washington, DC and approached Sean Astin after his speech at the Capitol (Mr. Astin sits on the President's Council for Service and Civic Participation). Amy asked him to help out her "fledgeling charity" by volunteering with other members to build a Children's Reading Garden for a public library.

Their planning was perfect. They knew that Astin, having just given a public appeal for active community service, could hardly turn Amy down. They picked those themes because Astin is a staunch advocate for literacy, and gardening would naturally lend itself to publicity for Astin's movie role as gardener Sam Gamgee. As luck would have it, Astin loved the idea of focusing the enthusiasm of LOTR fans toward a charitable community project, instead of the usual autographs and merchandise. He agreed to help build the garden!

With that kind of endorsement, membership in Bit of Earth rapidly expanded to hundreds of Astin's fans worldwide. All were told that BoE was working in direct association with "Reading is Fundamental" to raise funds and build gardens to promote literacy.

The garden was built in Beaverton, Oregon, in 2003, and Astin's presence gave them renewed international publicity among his fans. Other major LOTR websites covered the news and it seemed that the sky was the limit for Bit of Earth, with its small army of enthusiastic fans working side-by-side with celebrities to improve communities.

Then it all hit the fan. Amy got caught in a complicated lie, in which she tried to mooch free airline tickets for actors to fly from New Zealand for a Bit of Earth event. This resulted in a miserable trip for several actors. Two of them ended up sleeping on the floor of Amy and Abbey's filthy apartment, instead of the deluxe accomodations they had been promised for attending this "fundraiser."

After the discovery of one lie, hundreds more fell apart. Former Bit of Earth volunteers came forward with horror stories. Amy borrowed a friend's computer and didn't "log out," which gave open access to the official Bit of Earth email account, revealing hundreds of lies that attempted to manipulate celebrities, businesses, volunteers, etc. into supporting this fake charity.

When A Fan was written by one of their victims. It takes the reader through the incredible web of firsthand evidence, revealing just how the half-truths, exaggerations, blame games, and other manipulations were employed to swindle both fans and celebrities the world over. Even without the "high drama" of murder or huge sums of money, this book will fascinate you with the real-life details of con artists in action.

Can't get past the narrative voice

I have a morbid fascination with Andy Blake's awfulness, and I'd read through the online accounts, so I thought I'd try the book. The content is interesting enough, but I can't get past the style. Renne is a very self-satisfied narrator, very convinced of her own wit and charm. She's also so gleefully homophobic and transphobic that it makes the book almost impossible to read. It just makes me feel creepy. Like, no, Renne. I don't think it's funny to call a guy 'he' in quote marks every other sentence, and you don't sound magnanimous when you tell him you 'don't care if he's a dyke.'

Your mileage may vary on how much that bothers you, but it ruined the book for me.

(Almost) All-Girl True Crime

This story - the better for being true - moves quickly from revelation to revelation of astounding yet small-time duplicity, and of the gullibility all too common among those who wish to do good. Getting to know the anti-heroines (without being burned by them) is alone worth the price of admission. There is something pricelessly absurd about a self-proclaimed Warrior whose ultimate weapon is the fake suicide attempt.

Unusual among true crime stories, this one concerns major players - both con artists and dupes/avengers - who are women. The action takes place in a fandom centering around a group of men, the LoTR actors, of whom only one plays more than an elusive background role in the book. There is much food here for thought about sexual and gender politics.

While the story is dramatic even on a quick read, more of it would be accessible to a wider variety of readers if more background information were given; for instance about the organization of an international on-line fandom, the typical requirements for the success of a fan convention, or the IRS regulations concerning non-profit status. A great deal can however be gleaned from the text, with attentive reading.

A serious discussion of transsexuality and whether that is a relevant issue would have strengthened the book's focus. It is currently an unexplored subtext that has distracted some readers from the primary story.

The second part of Appendix A could, with a a bit of narrative added to the chat transcript, stand on its own as a very funny short story about clashing agendas. (Too bad that would probably not be quite legal.)

Object lesson

I remember reading vague bits of this whole mess years ago, toward the end of its coming-apart. I definitely remember thinking, how could anybody be fooled to such an extent?? In my ignorance I couldn't imagine being so gullible as to accept these clearly outrageous claims and behaviors.

And then I became part of an online fan community for a wildly popular TV show, and found myself sucked in to a hoax so elaborate, and so rabidly defended and maintained by its acolytes, that when it finally unraveled I actually wrote to Ms. Renne to apologize for judging her and the others taken in by this scam. I'd like to think that my personal alarm system would have been activated by the money involved (our hoax, similar though it was, didn't result in any financial involvement, thank heaven), but we all certainly accepted some pretty crazy, outrageous stuff.

In other words, no matter how incredible it may sound, it's definitely a possibility, and always something to be aware of and on guard for. Stay safe, people.

A “BEAUTIFULLY RESEARCHED HISTORY” OF THE COURAGEOUS 17th MIDDLESEX PALS: THE FINE FOOTBALLERS BATTALION

The sickness of heart which one feels when receiving news of a bereavement runs through this brilliantly and extensively researched book on a special part of the Great War’s Pals’ battalions: the people of the Footballers Battalion.

Andrew Riddoch and John Kemp have produced a challenging picture of the footballing lives lost 100 years ago in their updated work “When the Whistle Blows”. The authors have updated this special history for the centenary of this terrible war and I am reviewing the title on the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme as a special tribute to those who died on that terrible morning.

Much will continue to be said and written of the Great War as we now look at the conflict historically as the participants have gone from the field. I found this book incredibly sad to read for two reasons: my great uncle served in a Pal’s battalion and was killed in action, and I have also served in the British Army so I have a very small understanding (but not much) of what it was like although, as a volunteer myself, my motivation was, like the footballers, different from conscripted men.

I have also been a footballer (of sorts) as will all my generation and although very tall, it has never been a game that interested me much until I read this book and saw the special eye for the ball which these men all shared.

Football (or soccer) reigns as the greatest of all our games of sport played across the globe, so this book is a fitting tribute to all the keen-eyed men who gave their lives for their country from such a special and quite wide group of sportsmen.

And my sadness is tinged with the special waste of life associated with these particularly talented people although one could also write that of any specific group who died in World War One.

The excellent Richard Holmes wrote in 2008, quoting the authors, that “the spirit of the professional players, amateurs and ‘club enthusiasts’ within the ranks of the battalion made a lasting impression on everyone who encountered it”.

Holmes sums up for me that this is a “beautifully researched history of a fine battalion” and “a lasting tribute to men who remained true to their salt when the whistle blew, not on manicured greensward, but in a muddy trench”. Richard always put it so well!

Another splendid and sensitive comment about this book comes from Gordon Taylor who says “they paid the ultimate sacrifice” and “we will remember them” as the book “fully illustrates why it will be impossible to forget such heroes”.

And remembering these brave and skilled men is the lasting legacy of Riddoch and Kemp’s studious work with its excellent and careful chapter footnotes… and the book should find its way into most football club houses in the land as a memorial to football and footballers (one can but hope) and of that time in history, and possibly for today’s fans to ponder their heroes’ courage.

It is such sad imagery that when the army’s whistle was blown and the grappling up the trench wall started as they went over the top, it was not like going out into the floodlit arena, but to no-man’s land for their country and not their team, to the noise of a barrage and whistle and not to cheers.

From their research Riddoch and Kemp were able to make contact with the new generations whose forebears fought for today’s freedom - we often ignore how evil the Kaiser and earlier versions of the Gestapo were.

“When the Whistle Blows” is not merely a tribute and an historic account of some very brave and special men whose like we will probably not see again, there is a final special word from Major Buckley on 17th Middlesex: “I feel I cannot say too much for them, always cheerful and willing, and the first to volunteer for anything”.

That was the way it was then, and has been since, and may well have to be again should we face what the First War British footballers faced: something we all hope will never, ever happen again.

About the Author
DR. BRIAN SIMMONS is known as a passionate lover of God. After a dramatic conversion to Christ, Brian knew that God was calling him to go to the unreached people of the world and present the gospel of God’s grace to all who would listen. With his wife Candice and their three children, he spent nearly eight years in the tropical rain forest of the Darien Province of Panama as a church planter, translator, and consultant. Brian was involved in the Paya-Kuna New Testament translation project and studied linguistics and Bible translation principles with New Tribes Mission. Brian is now working to complete a new translation of the Scripture from the ancient Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek.
