Python and Matplotlib Essentials for Scientists and Engineers is intended to provide a starting point for scientists or engineers (or students of either discipline) who want to explore using Python and Matplotlib to work with data and/or simulations, and to make publication-quality plots. The active user base of Python and Matplotlib has been growing rapidly in recent years as people realize these packages have a very high-level of functionality, are freely available for any likely operating system, and are relatively simple to learn and use as compared with similar software solutions.
No previous programming experience is needed before beginning this book, as my aim is to make this a stand-alone introduction to Python and Matplotlib. Indeed, my hope is that you the reader can take this introduction, and discover for yourself in just a few hours whether Python and Matplotlib provide most if not all of the tools you need to get your work done, and your publication quality plots rendered.
The examples given in this book are available for download at the companion website.

About the Author
Matt A. Wood graduated with a B.S. degree in Physics from Iowa State University, and Masters and Ph.D. degrees in Astronomy from the University of Texas at Austin. He spent a year as a NATO Postdoctoral Fellow at the Université de Montreal in Quebec before accepting a position as assistant professor at The Florida Institute of Technology. He spent the 2008-2009 academic year on sabbatical at Radboud University in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, where he was first introduced to the Python programming language. In 2012 he joined the Department of Physics & Astronomy at Texas A&M University-Commerce as department head. His current research focuses on mass-transfer binary star systems known as cataclysmic variables. He has been an author on more than 80 peer-reviewed publications, and a similar number of non-refereed publications. He lives in Greenville, Texas, and when not doing astronomy or administrative tasks he enjoys playing guitar and bass, walking his Doberman Dexter, and exploring the world with his wife Janie.

Shoot the Translator

I can only imagine, reading all the good reviews on this novel, that people have simply overlooked the horrid translation of this novel. I have over 200 works by Chinese authors written in English or translated into English from Chinese - and many are woefully inferior as writers to Yu Hua (who I consider marginal, at best, and I have read all of his work) - but I can think of only a handful where the translator has done such a disservice to the author. Were it not for the plot, settings, situations and the Chinese words and names, there would be absolutely nothing that marks this work as being by a Chinese author. The ridiculous American slang that is tossed around is a travesty, and the translator should be shot for butchering Mr. Yu's work. The dialogue reads like some poorly written drivel by a "C" (American) student, and to anyone who has spent time living in China (I am an American and have been here 16 years), it is an affront to Chinese works translated for western consumption.

In 1865 Benton becomes the surgeon of the 98th New York where he remains until the end of the war.

A very interesting look into the life of a civil war surgeon

I have always been interested in medical life during the pre-1900 period. These letters, and the accompaning input by Mr. Loperfido, really opened my eyes to some interesting aspects I would have never thought about!

A surgeon's Tale

This is an honest and thorough look at being a surgeon during the Civil War. It really takes you into that era of our country. As you read his letters, you can feel what he felt and know how it was for him. An excellent read for a Civil War buff.
