Bought this book for my educational psychology class from amazon because it was much cheaper than the bookstore. It was in great condition with no highlighting or bent pages. This was an interesting read about the psychology required by educators from any stand point. My eventual career goal is to be a counselor, so I am hoping to apply the skills I learned from this book to my career. I also kept this book instead of reselling it to add it to my educational reference library.

pretty informative book. used it for educational psychology college class. one less star because I have not read all of it/ since a few years ago so I don't remember exactly how great the book is and isn't specifically. but i definitely did learn a lot.

Ordered this for my business and it really helped. Very informative, Any independent pharmacy should own it. After all, we're the only ones still doing compounds. You won't see one of the Wal-Pharmacy's doing any.

About the Author

Gary Borich grew up on the south side of Chicago, where he attended Mendel High School and later taught in the public school system of Niles, Illinois. He received his doctoral degree from Indiana University, where he was director of evaluation at the Institute for Child Study. Dr. Borich is a professor in the College of Education at the University of Texas at Austin and a past member of the board of examiners of the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

 

Dr. Borich’s other books include Observation Skills for Effective Teaching, sixth edition; Educational Assessment for the Elementary and Middle School Classroom, second edition (with M. Tombari); Clearly Outstanding: Making Each Day Count in Your Classroom; Becoming a Teacher: An Inquiring Dialogue for the Beginning Teacher; Educational Psychology: A Contemporary Approach,second edition (with M. Tombari); Educational Testing and Measurement, tenth edition (with T. Kubiszyn); and The Appraisal of Teaching: Concepts and Process.

 

Dr. Borich lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife, Kathy and his son, Damon and daughter, Brandy. His interests include training and riding Arabian horses and he is the author of An Illustrated Introduction to Classical Horsemanship.

Teachers are Pivotal for Learner-Centeredness to Occur

Finally... I found an author and educator who states the obvious. In order to be a successful teacher, one has to first understand oneself as a person - the positive and negative aspects of our personality and identity that impact our instruction. Only by understanding these issues are teachers freed to "move the learner to the center".
Borich does an outstanding job utilizing a friendly, conversational manner of writing that easily engages the reader. Research seems to be placed in a better context when Borich "keeps it real" for the reader.
I especially appreciate his chapter on questioning strategies, a blatent area of weakness for many beginning and veteran teachers alike. He even extends questions techniques into promoting thinking and problem solving.
Finally, Borich successfully articulates the value of group collaboration often overlooked by teachers hooked on cooperative learning. One cannot exist without the other or student accountablily will drop and student frustration will prevail.
This is a must read book for any teacher trainer in search of research to support effective teaching methods.

Little Detail

I have read many methods books over the past 4 years. This book was the initial text required in a methods class. I found it to be very poor in detail (especially for the preservice teacher). I finished the book wondering, "where are the specific how to's?" I felt that I wasn't prepared to go into a classroom to teach a lesson. We were all struggling in class.

So, I decided to go to another college bookstore and found "Methods for Effective Teaching" by Paul Burden. This book answered all my questions and went into great detail. It is based on the INTASC Standards and PLT of the Praxis.

PLEASE READ THIS BOOK..IT IS VERY IMFORMATIVE

This book is absolutely wonderful. It provides a wealth of useful information on various topics. The best chapters in the text are the Unit and Lesson Planning and the goal's and Objectives. Borich breaks down EXACTLY how to compose a great behavioral objective. Furthermore, he gives concrete examples that are great. I would recommend this text to anyone who is an education major. A MUST BUY.

Good exposition

This is a good bridge between a basic intro stats book and a more difficult mathematical stats book (e.g. Rice's Mathematical Statistics). It gives some (but not all) of the proofs to key results, without skipping over a lot of steps like some higher level texts. In addition, the writing is more explanatory and seeks to convey the intuition better than some other books. I recommend this textbook.

Great book.

The most boring-looking stats book you can imagine, but also the most useful I've used. The right balance of theory and practicality for a doctoral student in a non-stats field, who nevertheless needs to understand the topic. The bland and dense layout belies a remarkably accessible text. Don't be intimidated!

This book was the assigned text for a graduate level statistics course I took. It is well written with examples for every technique discussed and lots of exercises at the end of each chapter. I highly recommend it.
