Be a Professional

The Profession of Dietetics: A Team Approach is essential for a dietetics major. This is not your typical textbook with pages and pages of information that you will be tested on later. This textbook shows you all of your options when you are entering into a career in nutrition and dietetics and also how to achieve your career. The beginning of the book starts out with the history of dietetics which provides a lot of valuable information such as a quote from Babylonian stone tablets, "If a man has pain inside, food and drink coming back to his mouth...let him refrain from eating onions for three days." This writing was from around 2500 B.C. and this is the first known written dietary recommendation. As a living organism we live off of food and we need to know the adequate amounts of everything that we intake. The book’s first chapter describes how food and health have always directly correlated throughout history. Although this is true the profession of dietetics has progressed rapidly in the past 100 years. I liked that the book used evidence of prenatal dietary prescription from the bible. The book shows you a profile of a professional including their background and answers many of the questions that may arise. It also includes suggested activities, selected websites, suggested readings, and references that I have found to be very helpful.
This book is very easy to read, it is as if the author is in your head. Once a question arises after reading a section it seems that it is the title or theme of the next section. So therefore your questions are answered immediately. Now that may not be the case for everyone but this was my experience. The layout of the chapters flow very well. The authors use of titles and clearly defined subtitles help organize all of your thoughts. Lots of graphs, pictures, and data to look at! Personally those are the best pages to me because even though you are reading does not mean you need to look at word after word for hundreds of pages. That is why I prefer this textbook over Advanced Nutrition and Human Metabolism by Sareen S. Gropper.
The book is called a team approach because that is what they describe dietetics as. This is referring to having physicians and dietitians work together for the health of a patient. It describes different ways you are able to achieve your goal such as showing the importance of communicating. It tells you the path to success in dietetics such as education and training, supervised practice experience, credentials, and joining professional associations. All and all, this is my favorite textbook I have because it is answering my questions I have about my future and enlightening me in what I need to do to get where I want to go.

Study guide with the right details

When you are looking for a study aid, you need something that will guide you in the right direction…something with the right details on it. This guide has all of the information on it that will be covered on the test. You don’t need to worry about going back through your books or notes or any other study aid. Just get the guide and use it wisely. The guide has everything lined up and organized so you don’t have to do a thing but concentrate on studying. It’s nice to have it ready for you any time you have a minute. You can spend your time studying and not worry about the other aspects that sometimes go into the study sessions.

I'm a Keith Ward fan!

If you want an intelligent and readable discussion of why an educated (i.e well-read) and thoughtful person might believe in a spiritual reality beyond matter, you can start here. A good antidote to Dawkins et al. In the British tradition of erudite yet highly readable philosophy, as Bertrand Russell was to atheism. I'm glad someone like this survives in academia, and I hope they aren't persecuting him too much.

Charles R. Stoner is Robert A. McCord Endowed Professor for Executive Management Development at the Foster School of Business, Bradley University, Illinois. Dr. Stoner earned his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from Florida State University. An award-winning scholar and teacher, he has authored eight books and numerous academic articles. His most recent books are A Life in Balance: Finding Meaning in a Chaotic World and The Adversity Challenge: How Successful Leaders Bounce Back from Setbacks. A dynamic and engaging speaker and facilitator, Dr. Stoner works with a variety of businesses and organizations throughout the country, specializing in leadership, interpersonal dynamics, and change, as well as leader coaching for personal growth and reinvention.

Jason S. Stoner is Assistant Professor of Management at Ohio University. Dr. Stoner earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Bradley University and his Ph.D. from Florida State University. Fantastic!!

Tyler Bennett has had a crush on Hailey Conner since high school. Now that he has torn his ACL and is no longer able to win the Olympic Gold Medal, he has moved back to Sapphire Falls and next door to Hailey. Any time they are around each other they fight and can't seem to get along. Apparently it has been a cover, and they have been seeing each other for over three and a half years, but NOT in Sapphire Falls! You have got to read how the youngest Bennett brother and the snarky Mayor try to work this one out. Another terrific book by Erin Nicholas! Be sure to get your copy now. Everyone knows the Bennett boys are HOT and Sapphire Falls is where everyone wants to go. This book is a standalone, but once you've read it, you will want to read the rest of Ms. Nicholas' Sapphire Falls series. They are all terrific books!

Love Ty & Hailey

Erin Nicholas continues to amaze me with her sexy, heartwarming and beautifully written stories in her Sapphire Falls series. I love the cast of characters in this series and how their lives intertwine with one another in this small town. Right from the beginning, Hailey Conner's bossy and aloof personality has readers curious to know what her "deal" is because she initially comes across as not a very likable character. However, we all know in the romance world, there's more than what you see on the surface. We also saw the undercurrents between her and Ty Bennett whenever they were in the same vicinity of each other so we really wanted to know their story so I devoured Getting Over It all in one sitting. This book can be read as a standalone but it is so much better if you've read all the other books first and get to know those fun loving characters.

There was definitely more to Hailey than the public persona she let the folks of Sapphire Falls see. I really enjoyed learning more about Hailey and the struggles she's had to overcome. I liked that the author let us see the real Hailey with her flaws and all behind her facade and that she showed more emotions. We got to see that she was not perfect; she relied on a gazillion sticky note pads to keep her organized and to remember things throughout her day. Underneath her tough exterior, she really cares deeply for those she considers her friends and they love her unconditionally and did not judge her.

Ty is the youngest of those sexy Bennett brothers and the one that can get under Hailey's skin like no other man. These two seriously were made for one another in the bedroom. I swooned over his dominant side as Hailey did, which is surprising since she is always so in control. They've had this secret affair for years and have an understanding of how things are when they are alone, but Ty wants to change that now that he's moved back home to Sapphire Falls. This has unnerved Hailey who does not like change. Ty and Hailey are far from perfect but their main issue is communication in their relationship. Both of them are hiding the most important parts of themselves from one another and when the truth comes out, Ty and Hailey have to accept each other's flaws and all.

I've said it again and again that I wished Sapphire Falls was a real town so I could visit. The author has made this fictional town and the folks who live there seem so real to me thanks to her storytelling. I loved that we finally got to read Ty and Hailey's story and it was so worth the wait.

Absolutely Wonderful!!!!

Hailey and Ty give new meaning to the phrase 'absence makes the heart grow fonder'. Apparently, it make it grow hotter too. But when Ty moves back to his hometown of Sapphire Falls it's the closeness that threatens to pull them apart. Hailey and Ty have no shortage of issues to overcome. Getting Over It is and emotional, quirky, fun ride from beginning to end. Ms. Nicholas never fails to deliver real characters with real issues who find real solutions. It's never a smooth ride but it's the bumps in life that make it real. An excellent addition to a wonderful series.

Two bomber crews launched in the first wave of attackers were shot out of the sky. Only pilot Will Fletcher survived the crash landing. Adrift at sea, Will made his way to land and escaped into the jungles of the Philippines, where he eluded capture by the Japanese with the help of Filipino guerrillas, whose ranks he joined to fight against their common enemy.

About the Author
Gregory G. Fletcher served as a naval aviator from 1969 to 1974, and is now a practicing attorney. He is the son of USS Intrepid pilot Will Fletcher, who was awarded a Navy Cross of heroism for his actions in World War II.

Excellent Account of a USN Torpedo Bomber Squadron at War!

Though Navy torpedo bomber squadrons played a major role in the Allied victory in the Pacific, such units haven't received their due in print, histories of VT squadrons being few and far in between. Gregory Fletcher's newly-published INTREPID AVIATORS, however, presents readers with a rare, detailed portrait of one such squadron - VT-18 - as it waged war across the Pacific in 1944.

In INTREPID AVIATORS, Fletcher, a gifted writer, skillfully weaves three storylines to produce a compelling account of carrier combat in the Pacific. Most prominently, INTREPID AVIATORS is the story of Fletcher's father, Willard M. Fletcher, a VT-18 Grumman Avenger pilot assigned to Air Group 18 on board CV-11 in 1944. Along with describing his father's service with VT-18, Gregory Fletcher details Air Group 18's combat record while on board USS Intrepid. Interwoven with those story elements is Fletcher's account of the ever-evolving American and Japanese strategies that shaped combat in the Pacific, strategies that eventually resulted in Will Fletcher and other Air Group 18 aircrew attacking the Japanese super-battleship Musashi on 24 October 1944 in the Battle of the Sibuyan Sea.

Aside from being an exciting account of young men at war, INTREPID AVIATORS furnishes a wealth of information on carrier ops circa 1944, shipboard life, etc. The book shifts back and forth between American and Japanese participants to give an informed and well-rounded picture of unfolding events.

Bottom line: INTREPID AVIATORS is a great read. The reader gets to know Will Fletcher and his squadronmates as living, breathing human beings, young men barely out of their teens who found themselves waging a pitiless war over the vast Pacific distances. INTREPID AVIATORS is a fine tribute to the squadron, air group and the carrier they flew from. Highly recommended.

Outstanding Tribute to WW II Naval Aviators

I have a long standing interest in World War Two military aviation and regard this as one of the very best books I've ever read about the subject.The descriptions of carrier flight operations couldn't be more vivid and realistic, and do an excellent job of conveying the stress and tension of the daily lives of the pilots and aircrewmen.
The squadron chronicled in this book richly deserved to have it's story told. Of twenty eight pilots embarked, fifteen won the Navy Cross. One of them was the author's own father, and he deserves great credit for relating his father's exploits with such matter of fact objectivity.The story of the elder Mr. Fletcher's shoot down and eventual rescue practically merits a book of it's own.
I do note a couple of errors that World War Two naval aviators would have caught. Student pilots flew their trainers from the cockpit where they would fly when soloing. In the case of the Stearman, this places the student in the rear cockpit with the instructor up front, not the other way around. Also, the outstanding SNJ trainers flown by the Navy in WW II were built by North American, not Boeing.The two companies were eventually combined in a corporate merger in the 1990s but this was fifty years after the wartime aircraft were built. These minor mistakes are easily corrected in a second printing and would raise an outstanding book almost to the level of perfection.
I wish the author's father could have lived to see the book in print - highly recommended.

Great WWII Book

I've seen many movies and read many stories about operations in the Pacific, but I have never read anything quite like this. The author brought the pilots to life and treated them with such respect. I have always know it is difficult to fly from an aircraft carrier, but this book does a great job of explaining the technical side of flying from a ship without boring the reader to tears. There is a great combination of technical detail, individual story lines and overall historical context. Well worth the time to read.

Hard look at arts programs in America

Intelligent insight from a highly knowledgable Dean of Julliard School of Drama, Music, and Dance. Well put analysis of how the arts currently fit into our American culture. Great analogies and personal stories that relate to the principals he has supported in the arts education for all of the Julliard student body.
Commencement speeches and notes from board of directors meetings that he shares in this book are long time needed in advocating the importance and value of cultivating career artists who will pursue making a difference in society through the mastery of their art.

Joseph Polisi takes the role of musician and artist and the training of our cultural ambassadors beyond the concert and rehearsal halls and places them into the role of citizens of the world who have a message to convey through their art. In speaking bolding, plainly, and concretely about changes at Juilliard in training our current and future artists, Dr . Polisi conveys a message about the challenges and opportunities confronting the arts in American in the 21st Century and how to deal positively with them to preserve our cultural heritage. The book's message is poignant, timely, and very very important to those who care about the classical arts and music and how to perpetuate their intrinsic value in a climate that often does not appreciate their depth and breath.

A journalist who has long covered the Middle East, Mackey destroys the myth that toppling Saddam Hussein will solve Iraq's problems and America's. She clearly traces the complex and diverse history of the country from its biblical roots to the present day. The most salient feature of the country, she argues strongly, is its fragility: Iraq is a patchwork of peoples (both Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims, as well as Kurds) that hangs together by a thread. Without addressing how these peoples can form a national identity, the author claims, a post-Saddam Iraq could be worse than the Balkans. But even though much of the book centers on Iraq's long history, it is the author's account of the past 40 years that is the most instructive. While much of the information about Saddam has been presented elsewhere, Mackey summarizes his career well: his seizure of power, with its emphasis on the country's Arab roots, came after a long time of local chaos, and his rule of terror has kept him in charge but led to wars that impoverished his people. "Like Baghdad at the end of the Gulf War, Iraq itself is a body whose skin is intact but whose bones are broken." Mackey's last chapter is her most chilling. If there is no focus on what will come after Saddam, she says,then Iraq's future the disintegration of the country into separate warring cantons will be a nightmare, both for its people and for the United States. With the Bush administration focusing on Iraq as the next step in its war against terrorism, this book sounds an important cautionary note.

Iraq has been a country of great interest to the United States since the 1991 Gulf War. Although that conflict ended over a decade ago with the military defeat of Saddam Hussein's forces and their expulsion from Kuwait, low-level U.S. bombing of Iraqi targets has continued to the present time. The events of September 11 have elevated Iraq to a higher level of concern to U.S. decision-makers. In recent months, calls for a massive attack against Iraq are being heard from different governmental and journalistic corners in the United States. Yet, Iraq and its history remain a mystery to most Americans. This highly readable, jargon-free, and evenhanded book goes a long way in providing a comprehensive account of Iraq's recent political history to Western readers. Mackey, a veteran journalist who has traveled to Iraq and has written extensively on the Middle East, has done an admirable job of explaining the myriad social, political, and cultural forces that have shaped the contours of the contemporary Iraqi state and its authoritarian political system. Veteran journalist Mackey (The Saudis: Inside the Desert Kingdom [1987]; The Iranians: Persia, Islam and the Soul of a Nation [1996])offers a comprehensive history of Iraq and its early Mesopotamian civilization with penetrating biographies of all of its historical figures through the ages, shedding perspective on the current regime of Saddam Hussein and looking ahead to what an Iraq without Hussein might resemble. Modern Iraq is a concoction of multiple divergent communities (Sunni, Shii, and Christian) who view themselves as having a national identity apart from Arab nationalism. King Faisal, modern Iraq's architect, built a strong national army as a tool for cementing all of the elements within. It took a tough Saddam Hussein to later bring the power of the state to fruition. But Mackey warns that those who simplistically see the removal of Saddam as a cure-all are fooling themselves. Chaos in the Persian Gulf could ensue, the author argues, which would threaten American security, as well as thrust the U.S. into the hellish task of "nation-building." Probing the Complexities of Iraqi History and Policy

The Reckoning rates as indispensable reading and study for all students, policy analysts and makers, military leaders, and anyone interested in Iraq's historical basis and future development. Mackey begins with the ancient history of Mesopotamia and quickly transitions through to contemporary policy. She includes an afterword written on Christmas Day of 2002, with the winds of war billowing from Washington. Her detailed account of Saddam's legacy and struggle provides valuable insight to anyone with an interest in the region. Although she prescribes no policy recommendations for the future of Iraq, her final words remain an issue the U.S. continues to struggle with today. "To what extent was the U.S. going to be pulled into the abyss of Iraq?" This book provides a fantastic foundation to understand the formation and development of the Iraqi state before and during Hussein's reign.
My one critique: the book provides valuable insight into the complexities of Iraq and how the state became that way, but Mackey does not attempt to break new ground. She proposes no new policies to help future administrations, nor strategies to help military leaders, NGOs, diplomats or others attempting to negotiate the pitfalls of the region. Regardless, I am better off for having read the book, and the author presents plenty of detailed research. Her selected bibliography provides the reader with numerous sources, scholarly and otherwise. Some military units preparing to deploy to Iraq have bought every key leader a copy of Mackey's book. Those leaders will be much better prepared to understand the quagmire they are about to enter, regardless of whether they know what strategies to pursue.
Highly recommended for anyone interested in understanding the region or the news better.

The consequences of war with Iraq

This book provides an extremely important ability to understand the dynamics of Iraq, especially related to a war with consequences not limited to Iraq, but to the whole Middle East and may escalate beyond. The authors states "the road to Baghdad must lead through Jerusalem". Because the writing is so good, this is a very readable book.
The scholarship on the history of the region and Islam, and the development of the post WWI state is essential to the understanding of Iraq and the role of Saddam Hussein. The author traces this history and brings it to the present dilemma. This book chronicles Saddam Hussein's well orchestrated control over his country from the time of his accession to today in light of the various ethnic and religious groups and his strong tribal/military strengths. Control was achieved using techniques of a modern state; economic controls, environmental manipulation, genocide, and removal of the dissenting press and religious leaders resulting in lost of an educated population and alternatives for government.
The last chapter is provocative and terrifying. The author makes the case that removing Hussein will not alone solve the major issues, and may escalate the Arab/Israel conflict with the developed world losing essential oil supplies and potentially the elimination of Israel. The case is made that solutions on Palestine must be part of the Iraq policy. One can debate what that policy should be, but the author suggests that the U.S. has behaved at best as naïve and at worst as manipulative and destructive to the Arab world.
The book shows that the U.S. must look beyond the elimination of Hussein to the larger view of the consequences and methods to ensure stability in the region. She questions if a large U.S. (UN) military force in Iraq would ensure oil production, minimize the conflict with Israel, and eventually produce a democratic nation representing the major ethnic religious groups. The author shows that even with a very large police action, these goals may be nearly impossible.
To the world, the only U.S. interest is the strategically important oil and the cruelty of Hussein, who wants to have the military power to protect his position. Without the oil, the brutality would be a minor U.S. concern as it was in the Congo. The book provides a excellent launching pad for the discussion on the long term goals in the region.

A Good Historical Overview

The subtitle of "The Reckoning" is somewhat misleading, billing itself as being about "Iraq and the Legacy of Saddam Hussein," when nearly half of the book's length is devoted to Iraq's history BEFORE "The Butcher of Baghdad" came to power. Nevertheless, it still works quite well as a one volume overview and comes at a very critical time in which the U.S. is again considering military action against the country. It also chillingly portrays the trajedy that has befallen this turbulent country because of its unfortunate history and outlaw leadership.
The book mostly consists of historical accounts drawn from other sources. Author Sandra Mackey did in fact visit Iraq while researching it, but she was very limited in where she could go or who she could talk to. Her first person accounts of Saddam's totalitarian society are brief, but chilling in their implications. Mackey uses them as a backdrop for her straightforward account of Iraqi history from Mesopitamina times until the present. The story is a tragic one, of course, made even more so by the fact that the country enjoyed a brief period of prosperity before Saddam plunged it into the nightmares of the Iran/Iraq war, the Gulf War and internal genocides against the Shia and Kurd populations.
Mackey is a very good writer, and for the most part her prose is crisp and readable. On the downside, she repeats herself a bit too much, and at nearly 400 pages the narrative lags a little at times. Nevertheless, Mackey has provided a valuable service by giving Americans (and other Westerners) the chance to catch up on a subject that seems about to rivet the wrold's attention once again. For that, I give it an enthusiastic recommendation.
