Beautifully done

I read this book all in one sitting. The descriptions of the post-apocalyptic world are extremely well done. However, the first things that strikes the reader about Mr. Ambrose's story is the point of view. Only very few authors ever venture in the scary realm of second-person narrative: Camus, Calvino, Duras. Very few and yet some great names in this list. Why? Because it takes guts to write in that POV, and Mr. Ambrose not only has guts, he has a very good reason to make that courageous choice. Get to the end of this beautiful story and you will see. Beautifully done.

A Tight Tale of Future War Well Done!

Ambrose knocks his this brilliant short story straight outta the park with this twisty Russian Doll tale of Future War. Right up until the last words, I'm not kidding, the twists keep coming. The description is a rich, heartless Gothic-Apocalyptic mural and the tension a High Wire Trapeze Act of Literary Circus-manship! An absolutely wonderful diversion for the literary recess our minds need. Highly Recommended!

Is this real life?

Ambrose's short gripped me from the beginning and never let go. The part I loved most was the point of view at which it was written. As a reader, you felt like you were almost watching everything unfold rather than reading the words on the page. The author definitely has a voice and we all need to hear it. I put this story up there with the first installment of Wool by Hugh Howey. It is just that good!

Amazing Book

This Hypnotic Script book is amazing. I liked Volume 1 but this one is just as great and even better then I thought. Whether it is for a quick reference or for looking up a hypnosis script for a new client. John Cerbone shares his knowledge and expertise to help the reader. I highly suggest ths book for anyone who has purchased his first one and for this those who didn't you are missing out on an opportunity to do some of the mastering with John Cerbone's first hand concerning Hypnosis. It is a great addition to my hypnosis library. John Cerbone is a great teacher but, also a experienced writer for scripts. Very Good, but Could Have Been Exceptional Regency Romance

This review is of “The Skilled Seduction”, book #3 in the “Scandalous Secrets” series by Tracy Goodwin, and the third book I’m reviewing for The Carolyn Awards.

The Story: The book begins with the heroine, Lady Victoria Montgomery, putting into motion a plan to win the love of Tristan MacAlistair, a barrister, her brother-in-law-Victoria’s brother Sebastian is married to Tristan’s twin sister, Gwen-and the hero of the book. Victoria’s plan: to make Tristan want her.

The plan somewhat works: Victoria and Tristan make love, but he tells Victoria he will never love her. Tristan then tries to coerce Victoria into marriage, his effort at “doing the right thing”; when that fails, he kidnaps her. Despite this, Victoria falls further in love with Tristan. Later, secrets he is keeping come to light, and a family tragedy causes the couple to separate. However, the love between Victoria and Tristan is strong enough to help them through their pain, to find each other again and have their Happily Ever After.

Upside: Rarely do I read books where both the hero and heroine are so emotional. It’s great to see a male character like Tristan willing and open with his emotions. Both Tristan and Victoria are fully developed characters and there is room for more stories in the series.

Downside: What keeps “The Skilled Seduction” from being a 5 star book for me is the fact that Tristan kidnaps Victoria, a storyline I found completely unnecessary and changed the tone of the book. It really brought the book down for me, although Ms. Goodwin redeemed herself in the latter stages.

Sex: A few scenes, which are more focused on the emotional aspect of lovemaking rather than being overly descriptive.

Violence: After Sebastian finds out that Victoria and Tristan have become lovers, Sebastian and Tristan engage in a fistfight; neither man is seriously injured, although blood is shed by both.

Bottom Line: Victoria’s unnecessary kidnapping knocks the book down a peg, but “The Skilled Seduction” is still a very good Regency romance.

Well-written Angst

The pace of Skilled Seduction is a bit more even with a tad more action than the previous 2 novels so that overall it is the best of the 3.
But the changes to the character Tristan, whom I actually liked in previous books - were infuriating. Why would a successful barrister and businessman who admires his wife's intellect confide a secret to his sister but NOT to his wife???? Why would a woman who previously displayed incredible insight at recognizing "true love" suddenly turn down the marriage proposal for which she'd been wrangling because he said something incredibly stupid and contrary to what she KNEW to be true?

I should've known that the only way to make a decent length story out of two characters that were already in love in the previous book would be to afflict them with mega stupidity. The heart-wrenching angst they suffer for their stupidity is actually well-written, so if you like that sort of thing, you'll really enjoy this one.

Oh I forgot... come on 2016 so I can read #4. The first 3 were great and I found it was hard to put them down though this series was the first I'd read from Tracy I look forward to reading many more.

Nothing wrong with this item...

...But rather with Amazon's packaging.
This second volume of Titan's collection of AlexRaymond's FLASH GORDON is just as careful and faitfhul as the previous one, overall design and supplemental text pieces included.
Pay no attention to the now usual "Item under review" notice. It has become the standard reaction from Amazon when they receive enough complaints about damaged items due to improper packaging, something that has become more and more frequent of late.
The only thing "under review" here should be Amazon's packaging service and its alarming decline.

REVIEW: FLASH GORDON VOL.2 - THE TYRANT OF MONGO

This second volume of the adventures of Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon that spanned 1937 - 1941 published by Titan Books is, dare I say, better than the first one. The artwork this time seems more intricate than the first time around. This could be due to a better transfer of the originals or to Alex Raymond's art getting more refined as he became more experienced drawing the characters and such.

The introduction by Doug Murray this time gives us an insight of the progression Flash Gordon did from the printed page to the silver screen thanks to the Universal Pictures serials starring Buster Crabbe. Honestly, I find myself looking forward to these "chapters" of the character's history as much as the stories that come along with it. We also learn that Raymond used live models for his art!

The stories, largely introduce us to the adventures of Flash Gordon in Arboria where we meet Prince Barin and his band of warriors. It's a fun read and the artwork is a delight to look at. The publisher even reproduces the tiny dots from the printing process which used to appear in old comic books up to the 1980's, something the most nostalgic of us truly miss.

Overall, this tome is a true work of art and of love for the character. Something that should be on bookshelves everywhere.

Titan gets it right! I own the Kitchen Sink Press Flash Gordon books and yes they look very good, they have glossy pages and bright colors but that is not how they looked in the original newspapers. I love the way Titan has used a paper that is high quality that gives the colors and printing the look that the strips had back in their day. While at the same time making the strips look as good as or better than the day they were first printed. It is about time someone showed the love and attention these strips deserve and collect the entire run of Flash Gordon. I will be in line to buy every book of the series and I hope you will too. You will be glad you did.

Older brother of novelist Henry James, William James (1842-1910) was a philosopher, psychologist, physiologist, and professor at Harvard. James has influenced such twentieth-century thinkers as Richard Rorty, Jurgen Habermans, Michel Foucault, and Julia Kristeva. Giles Gunn is Professor of English and of Global & International Studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara. He is author of 'Culture of Criticism and Criticism of Culture' and edited Early American Writing for Penguin.

A sweet man and great thinker

William James remains our greatest and most original philosopher, as well as a great psychologist and scholar of religion. Together, James and Mark Twain made the world take notice of us as serious intellectual and artistic contenders. While James never had much chance to pull the many threads of his philosophy together, the writings in this volume show much of what was at the core of his thought.

His style is outstanding, one reason he and brother Henry were aptly and jointly described as the novelist who is a psychologist and the psychologist who is a novelist. I find it helpful to read James as if he and I were in fluent conversation; that way, the great lecturer and conversationalist come to the fore, transcending most other 19th Century prose.

THE PARK HOTEL built in 1934 was rumoured to have been Chairman Mao's favourite. It is a landmark in Shanghai and representative of pre-Communist China. For almost fifty years, the Art Deco hotel was the “tallest building in the Far East” —and for many years, the tallest outside of North America. This skyscraper, an architectural expression of modernity and capitalism, was commissioned by bourgeois Chinese businessmen. They hired the Austro-Hungarian architect, Laszlo Hudec (1893–1958), to bridge Western ideas of modernity and the needs of China. Today, in China and abroad, Hudec has become a “star architect” of the pre-Communist period.

About the Author
LENORE HIETKAMP wrote the first version of this study on Laszlo Hudec and the Park Hotel in 1998. The architect's work then began to catch the eye of scholars and architectural enthusiasts around the world. Lenore has given over twenty lectures on Laszlo Hudec, from Victoria, Canada, to Shanghai, China, on subjects ranging from the hotel as pop art to the architect's European roots. She has contributed to a book on Shanghai’s visual culture and written an encyclopedia article on the hotel. Her exhibit on Hudec still hangs on the walls of the Park Hotel. The exhibit opened in 2001 to much fanfare and a large audience that included city officials and current residents of Hudec's buildings. After seven years in a PhD program at the University of Washington, Lenore now works as an editor and specializes in architectural history.
