Okay not bad, interesting for fans

Not bad if you're a fan. But it is not really much of a book. It's really just a bunch of random memories, through his life, that are loosely organized into chapters that encapsulate the respective memories. It is just so random after he addresses a few key points, that is, why did he leave The Stranglers, how the band was started, time in prison.

However it's worth reading if you like The Stranglers and Hugh's solo work. It's cool to read how the band began in the 70s and worked into the 80s. It was a different time without digital media. He has quite a few stories to tell and some very questionable judgement at times (harboring a friend/armed robber a couple of times).

It's a nice quick easy read and of course his and the band's work is unquestionably the star and main interest. I would have liked to have seen a little more introspection from Hugh. He has a book going over each song so that might be a good place to see more into his thinking. The songs aren't necessarily deep but they are often articulate and he has a way of expressing complex ideas simply...

"But who gets the job
Of pushing the knob?
That sort of responsibility
You draw straws for if you're mad enough"

But if you watch his interviews on youtube you can see how he is, pretty much just doesn't let things bother him too much and doesn't dwell on things, the how and why. I'm a big fan and it's a fun read though he could have done better but that would be asking him not not be Hugh. :)

Tour de Force

The old campaigner looks back and there is much to cover in a rock n roll life. He writes well in a stream of conscious narrative, weaving tales and milestones together under memoir headings rather than strict chronology. It's a good read with no sugar coating. Life in the Stranglers wasn't for the faint of heart nor what would now be considered PC. He seems a better man since leaving the band and shares his intelligent reflections well.

Hugh sets the record straight

As a long time Stranglers fan, I was overjoyed when I found this book - and I was not disappointed. Not surprisingly, Hugh Cornwell turns out to to be a more than decent writer, with effortlessly flowing prose and acute, often hilarious observations. Being a Stranglers fan, the period in the band was the most interesting to me, but others may find other parts equally interesting.

There was always a feeling that Cornwell was the brains of the Stranglers (especially when listening to the band's post-Cornwell output). This is corroborated by his (albeit biased) account of the band's story (as part of his own). Unlike the remains of the band, Cornwell bears no rancor after the split, and seems honestly puzzled by the others' attitude.

A must for any hard-core Stranglers/Hugh Cornwell fan.

About the Author

Richard John Stapleton, PhD, has taught a variety of subjects at Georgia Southern University, including entrepreneurship, organizational behavior, operations management, management information systems, and business policy using the case method. Stapleton also taught at US Air Force NATO bases in Turkey, Greece, Holland, Germany, and Italy.

A prolific author, Stapleton has written numerous papers, articles, and books, including Managing Creatively: Action Learning in Action, The Entrepreneur: Concepts and Cases on Creativity in Business, Attitudes of Family Business Owners Regarding Policies for Transferring the Wealth of Family Businesses, Academic Entrepreneurship: Using the Case Method to Simulate Competitive Business Markets, and many, many more.

A refresher course in Transactional Analysis emphasizes its application to the classroom.

Transactional Analysis (TA) was invented by psychiatrist Eric Berne and then popularized in his classic book, Games People Play, originally published in 1964. Stapleton (De-Gaming Teaching and Learning: How to Motivate Learners and Invite OKness, 1979), a retired professor, acknowledges Berne’s contribution by providing a salient overview of TA principles, including ego states and “OKness,” in the early chapters of this book. The focus of the content, though, is applying TA to “the total learning process” in a volume updating material that appeared in Stapleton’s previous work. While the author suggests his new book could apply generally to organizations and businesses, it seems most relevant to educators. Four of the eleven chapters concentrate on such specifics as classroom layouts, teaching methods, tests, grading, classroom management, and classroom games. The psychology behind classroom games is particularly intriguing; “classrooms are inherently Gamey,” writes Stapleton, “because of the natural presumption that students need teachers to help them, which more or less creates a Drama Triangle situation.” Perhaps most enticing is the author’s description of the “Classroom De-Gamer,” a “roulette”-type device he created to effectively spread out student anxiety. Students spin the De-Gamer’s arrow to randomize being called on. With the De-Gamer’s proper usage, “all ego states in students can see and feel that they are not being Persecuted or Rescued by a teacher playing a Game when they are called on to respond to classroom requirements and challenges.” This idea alone should spark a creative teacher’s rethinking of the traditional classroom environment, but it is just one of a number of alternative learning concepts covered in this enlightening book. Stapleton uses the final chapter to reflect on his career from the perspective of a retired 75-year-old looking back on chapters he wrote as a 38-year-old. Somewhat loose, freewheeling, and maybe a bit beyond the book’s scope, Stapleton’s parting shot more broadly concerns the state of students, universities, society, politics, and the world.

Illuminating, if quirky at times; insightful, eye-opening observations about the interplay of teachers and students in the classroom.

A great book. Exciting to read, clearly written and full of practical insights into global banking. Discusses tenable strategies for financial firms world-wide and contains insights that are difficult to find anywhere else. The authors taught a course based on this book at INSEAD and the book retains the liveliness and rigor of that excellent course.

Workbook is a great to a class.

I have used the Hypo-City workbook in my Land Use and Growth Management course at the University of Virginia for several years. What I like about the workbook is that it is based on GIS layers and approaches plan making as a logical series of layered rounds reflected in eight exercises. These can be used selectively - I use four of them and actually use several texts rather than Urban Land Use Planning. Students/instructors can customize the exercises to emphasize particular issues or to partially replicate a real community. Students work in teams and welcome this applied addition to course readings and lectures. I have developed a modification to highlight the issue of exurban sprawl and would be happy to share that with anyone who is interested. Contact me at dotson@virginia.edu.

A classic in animal social behavior

Nikolaas Tinbergen was one of the major figures in the development of ethology, the study of animal behavior. This is one of his earlier and most important works, studying the social behavior of animals. Later, he was a winner of a Nobel Prize.

This book begins by identifying social behavior as an important focus of study. Its aim is (page v): ". . .the presentation of a biological approach to the phenomena of social behaviour." Emphases? The behavior of animals in nature, studied via observation; the focus on three issues regarding that behavior--function of the behavior (survival value), causation, and evolution.

The book proceeds as follows: The first chapter defines social behavior and its importance, using a series of examples (e.g., the three-spined stickleback fish). After that, chapters consider the following aspects of social behavior--mating, family and group life, fighting, social co-operation, interspecies relationships, growth of social organization. The book concludes by considering evolutionary aspects of social organization, with an emphasis on using comparative methods. The last chapter suggests areas for future research.

As stated, nothing much new here--except that this was a pioneering work that set the stage for future and more sophisticated analyses. It deserves its status as a classic.

They fasten Settareh's hair with enchanted hairpins to transform her into a turtledove. But Prince Mehrdad's affections remain steadfast, and it is he who breaks the spell. Historical details in both the verse and illustrations readily transport readers to 15th-century Persia. "Carpets woven in jewel like colors brightened the walls, and the scent of ginger and cinnamon from the Indies and perfumed oils from Egypt hung in the air." Pomegranate trees, jasmine flowers and other Persian botanicals adorn Florczak's (The Rainbow Bridge; Birdsong) effervescent landscapes framed with intricate borders. The characters, however, often appear to be pasted on, lending them a hyperrealistic quality. Still, the exotic setting and cultural details make this one of interest to any collector of Cinderella tales. Ages 5-9. (May)

Kindergarten-Grade 4-After giving most of her money to a beggar, young Settareh spends her last coins on a cracked jug instead of purchasing fabric for a new dress to wear to the prince's celebrations. Resigned to remaining home, she discovers that the pot is inhabited by a pari that is able to grant her every wish. She attends the festival, catches the eye of the prince, leaves behind a diamond ankle bracelet, and is found by the queen. Settareh unwisely reveals the secret of the jug to her stepsisters, who steal it and instruct it to get rid of the young woman. The jug self-destructs, leaving behind six jeweled hairpins that, once placed in Settareh's hair, turn her into a turtledove. When the grieving prince befriends the bird, he finds the pins and pulls them out, thus restoring his beloved. The story is well told, although the drama, and hence the pace, is somewhat subdued. The narrative reads smoothly and majestically and Climo explains her choices in a source note. Florczak's sumptuous illustrations have jewel-like tones that glow against the brownline-paper background, and traditional designs decorate the text. The illustrations are realistic and appealing, although in one scene, Settareh is wearing a blue veil with her face exposed when the text specifies that she and the other women draped themselves in black to conceal their faces. Despite this minor flaw, this is a suitable complement to Climo's other "Cinderella" stories.

PLB 0-06-026765-8 A luminescent interpretation of an ancient Persian tale is Climo's latest entry to her multicultural collection of Cinderella tales (The Irish Cinderlad, 1996, etc.). Motherless Settareh, whose name means star (a reference to the shape of the birthmark on her cheek), has a typically Cinderella-esque existence with her stepmother and stepsisters. That the ignored and often neglected young woman blossoms into a beauty is a foregone conclusion, but here her aid manifests itself as a parifairyin a mysterious blue jar, and Settareh captures the interest of the young prince at the New Year celebration. The lush descriptions of an authentic time and place lend an exotic tone to the familiar tale: ``Each girl and every woman, no matter her age, covered her head with a cloak so that no stranger might look on her face. Then, like a flock of black birds, the mothers, daughters, sisters, and cousins flew down the road to the marketplace.'' Florczak's meticulously researched illustrations faithfully depict the ornate beauty of an ancient land. Life, Love and Jealousy in Persia

In this Persian variant of a Cinderella story, Shirley Climo has used language which invokes the flowery language of the Middle East without the wordiness. Robert Florczak's illustrations show both the simplicity and complexity of Persian art. An excellent pairing of author and illustrator to present a different version of a favorite folk tale.

Stilted, unrealistic, disappointing (SPOILERS)

I try to avoid giving negative reviews unless I really feel offended by something. I know how difficult it is to write a good story. This had some elements of a good story -- at first. The more I read, the less and less realistic I felt it was. None of the characters were deeply drawn, not even the main character. There were some intriguing ideas, but none were well developed. The writing was stilted. The characters were shallow. The editing was bad. The romance was unrealistic and cliched. I know the author was trying to create tension and drama, but none of it rang true. How, in such a tightly regulated cult, could the main character ride off on horseback for hours on end, day after day, and not get caught much sooner than she did?

I could almost have overlooked all that and given it maybe 2 stars or even 3 if she had managed to pull everything together in a satisfying way. But the ending -- ugh! Really? She just leaves the one character where he is to die and her superman rich daddy comes in deus ex machina and the super-pretty girl just flies away with her super-rich daddy to her super-perfect boyfriend?

I'm pretty pissed that I spent over $4 on this tripe. Don't waste your money. I feel like I read something that was vetted hastily by one of those feel-good creative writing workshops that doesn't allow people to make any real criticism. With some tight editing, a lot more character development, and much grittier drama, this writer could have written a 3-star book. She has some interesting ideas and is not *terrible* at language. But it feels like she barely even tried.

Not was I was hoping...

This book was just OK for me. I really felt like it could have been much, much better. The writing was pretty juvenile, but then again, I didn't realize that is was YA until after I read it.

Of course, the whole cult thing intrigued me...who doesn't love a good story about a cult...but I didn't feel like there was enough meat and potatoes in the cult's leader. I really needed MORE. More insight as to why he began the cult. More description about how and why the cult started. More information about why people chose to go with him and stay there. There just wasn't enough information. I didn't believe in the cult and found it impossible for the cult to even exist. I realize that the book is fiction, but good fiction makes you believe in the possibility of something like this actually taking place. This book just missed that.

The only part of the book I found interesting was the relationship between Twig and her mother and the character of Gran. I really like that woman.

Anyway, good for a quick read, but it was very juvenile for an avid reader.
