Excellent introduction to moral philosophy

Plato's Gorgias is one of the masterpieces not just of the Western, but of any Canon, and Waterfield's translation for Oxford World's Classics adds an informative introduction and many helpful explanatory notes. I have used this text for years in my ethics classes, and every time I read it I come away with something new. Plato pits Socrates, the defender of moral realism, against three opponents who represent varying degrees of moral relativism: Gorgias, the Elder Statesman of Sophistry, Polus, a young turk who is quickly trapped by Socrates, and Callicles, one of the greatest characters in all of philosophical literature, who presents a case not unlike that of Nietzsche's Uebermensch. Though it is difficult to say whether Socrates is fully successful in refuting his interlocutors, watching him try is both exciting and informative, and can serve as an excellent introduction to moral philosophy.

Wonderful English translation of the Gorgias

I assigned this to my political theory students last year, and learned what a fine job Arieti and Barrus have done. There are several other good translations out there; this one is more literal, but it makes good English sense nevertheless ("graspingness" and a few other awkward choices notwithstanding).

The great value of this edition, however, is the insightful scholarly introduction, the very helpful footnotes, the three appendices, and the glossary. The first appendix includes speeches from Thucydides which are relevant to the arguments about rhetoric from the Gorgias. The second one is an outline of the rhetorical principles laid out by the interloculotrs of the Gorgias, and the third is a short discussion of Socrates' use of the terms mythos and logos. The best thing in editorial materials, however, is the glossary, which offers extended scholarly explanations of key terms in the Gorgias and in Platonic philosophy generally.

On the downside: The translators have tried to show all the moving parts, as it were, of their work with the Greek text. So when they've supplied an English word not directly translated from a Greek word, they've put it in brackets. Some versions of the Bible do this as well. But the brackets are frequent and can get quite distacting at times, especially fro my undergrads I imagine. A more general concern with this choice would be: If you read Greek, you don't need Barrus and Arieti to tell you which words are direct translations and which aren't. But if you don't know Greek, you don't know what to do with this information, because you don't understand how the Greek sentence gets a long without these extra words. So it's seems like a pointless practice. Translate! And then when the readers learn Greek they can take a look at how you've done it.

Overall: a very impressive work, from two very careful and insightful readers and translators of Plato.

About the Author
Jane Piper Clendinning is professor of music theory at the Florida State University College of Music. She has published articles reflecting her interests in the history of theory, theory and analysis of twentieth-century music, computer pitch recognition, and computer applications in music. Her current research interests include theory and analysis of popular and world musics. She has served as the chair of the Advanced Placement Music Theory Test Development Committee and as an AP reader, and is a regular consultant at AP workshops and summer Institutes.

Elizabeth West Marvin is professor of music theory and former dean of academic affairs at the Eastman School of Music. She has published in the areas of music cognition, music theory pedagogy, theory and analysis of atonal music, contour theory, history of theory, and analysis and performance. She is past president of the Society for Music Theory and is currently co-chair of the Advanced Placement Music Theory Test Development Committee. Marvin is the 2012 recipient of the Gail Boyd de Stwolinski Prize for Lifetime Achievement in Music Theory Teaching and Scholarship.

A workbook with no answer key

Warning: no answer key at all in the book. Not even for odds or evens or something like that. This workbook is totally useless unless you have a teacher to tell you whether your answers are right and wrong. Just page after page of worksheets, which are designed to be torn out and handed in to a teacher. Not useful for self study - and annoying for a class too, because you will be reliant on the teacher to make the book useful. If they only want to grade certain ones, it's not like you could do the rest on your own for more practice. Disappointing. I am used to seeing at least 1/2 the answers provided in my textbooks, so that I may check my work. In the main textbook, which seems to be a very decent textbook, there are some exercises, and those have answers in the back. If you are using that textbook, you may have to make do with those, or find resources elsewhere to get more practice.

Great Theory book!

Awesome book! There is a lot you can get from this. There is a code that comes with it that allows you to do reviewing on a website. Also, it has great indepth work. Although, if you are not a great reader, it may not be the easiest thing to get through. But my theory teacher loves it, and he has gone through a lot of theory books.

I had to purchase this book, the workbook and the anthology for my theory class when I went back to college four years ago. I have since finally graduated from Music School. I am a Prime Amazon customer so I get all sorts of recommendations via email on a regular basis. I am so totally impressed that this book is still "the theory book". I purchased my books, going thru music school and they have become an excellent reference library for my piano studio. Great Book!!!!! I wish the pages were not coming out of it in some places. That's my only complaint. This book cost enough to be put together more securely.

This may be one of the worst textbooks I have ever used. I have three specific complaints, any one of which would kill the book for me:

1. It defines the math and theory beneath relational databases, which is good. But it just leaves it at that. It would help greatly if an English explaination accompanied the definitions. For example, their definitions of the normal forms. Just about every other book and web site author seems to be able to come up with an understandable natural language description but not these guys. They just throw the math onto the wall and see what sticks.

2. Not enough examples. Don't just say something is so; show me how it is so.

3. The examples that do exist are pathetic. Not only are they oversimplified compared to the practice problems, they're physically impossible to follow. Here's an example from Chapter 6, Section 6.5.2, Page 208: "consider ... defined by the CREATE TABLE statement (4.1), page 87, and the schema ... defined by the SQL Statement (6.3), page 197. As discussed earlier ... represented by the FDs in (6.5), page 199." To follow just this one example, you have to simultaneously refer to 4 pages, spread over more than 100 pages. Good luck. Whoever edited this mess - or didn't - should be ashamed of themselves.

This book may be an ok reference for people who already know the stuff, but God help you if you are trying to learn from it. The instructor's slides are significantly better, but I would still give them no better than a B.

While taking a databases course at college I found online documentation and tutorials to be more helpful and understandable. Very few examples and the examples given were impossible to follow. This book is more mathematical theory than anything else. Not recommended under any circumstances for anything more than a bonfire

Abbreviated but well worth it.

Do you have a stressful job? Do you ever get so frustrated you can actually feel your blood boil? This book is for you. It isn't very many pages but perfect if I need to decompress and don't have a lot of time, which is most of the time. The photos are beautiful and the captions are hilarious and help pull me back to reality. There is nothing better than diffusing tension with laughter.

This book is brilliant and really funny. And it is also a terrific and relaxing meditation. I've been giving copies to my family and friends and everyone loves it. This is a very smart author, I hope he writes more books!

Just Shake it Off

This book is meant to be a humorous meditation aimed at those who enjoy the humor of say…Saturday Night Live. I have been to Jason Headley’s website before and there are many funny short videos, stories and essays.

While the sentiment is basically – Shake it off – there is language that may offend some folks. I completely get the attitude though as many times, 98% of the time it’s at work, there are people you just want to shake…or curse….or wonder why you have given 29 years to state government and yet your experience and education are completely ignored on many important issues.

Whew – I guess that hit close to home!

The photos are lovely, calm scenes you would expect to see in motivational posters. The message is to take a deep breath and don’t let the bastards get you down. Leave the frustrations behind when you clock out for the day or when you have an unpleasant social or family engagement. I totally get it.

"The Invention of God" is a fascinating look at how early humans made sense about the world. Bill Lauritzen's interesting background as a psychologist, engineer, inventor, and just pure curiosity of our world has lead him to some fascinating theories about the origins of religion and science. This 432 KB digital book is composed of the following nine chapters: 1. The Pharaohs' Volcanoes, 2. Volcanic Lightning Bolts, 3. The Bible's Volcanoes, 4. The Volcano Gods, 5. Geological Creation and Destruction, 6. The Chemistry of the Soul, 7. The Oxygen Gods, 8. The Worship of Oxygen, and 9. Connecting the Dots.

1. Some may object to some speculation but I conclude that some of it was necessary and the author does a wonderful job of using converging knowledge to connect the dots. Well done!

In summary, the best way to describe this book is to compare it to a great independent movie. It may not have the budget, the polish, the backing of a major distributor but it has a great story propelled by the love and curiosity of its author. I enjoyed this book because it provides a unique look at religion and science and does so with very strong compelling arguments. I highly recommend it!

There's Nothing Quite Like This Book in Popular Publication. Ever.

This non-fiction book is criminally underrated. It's a crime that more people have not read it. After reading it myself (in a little more than 24 hours, mind you) I found "The Invention of God" awesome and spectacularly seminal: i.e., useful. I originally felt that perhaps anything contained in this book will have been information already covered in my previous readings or studies. However, it truly offers new knowledge and insight (at least to me) in the historical sense. Meaning - to my admitted surprise - it offers to me and contributes to my knowledge, despite that I've read Plato, Aristotle, Euclid, Democritus, Lucretius, Dante, Montaigne, Bacon, Ibn Sinna, Ibn Rushd, Voltaire, Descartes, Marx, Nietzsche, Goethe, Darwin, Paine, Russell, Mencken, Heidegger, Twain, Orwell, Sagan, Harris, Plantinga, Dawkins, Dennett or Hitchens (and etc). So, I thought this book would not offer me any new information as so many "New Atheist" authors tend to belabor the ideas and concepts of the history of anti-theism, but then I took a chance on this novel (in purchasing it) and found it useful despite all of that. Definitely worth the purchase! That is why I'm writing my first review on Amazon about this book: it's an injustice that it isn't more popular. If only [the author] were a professor of History (because this book is highly historical and geological and gives a rare historical look into the myths of religions), then perhaps this book would have more clout in the publishing world (since full professors are usually required to publish with academic publishing houses and have "their foot in the door"). Definitely a must-read for any theist-apologist (Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Jain, Hindu, Shinto or ANY) and a must-have in the book-shelf of any anti-theist literary collection.
