In 1715, the Spanish treasure fleet, bound for home, was passing through the Bahama Channel when a hurricane destroyed all of the ships, save one. More than a thousand lives were lost, and seventeen million pesos in registered specie and bullion went to the bottom. This tragedy occurred along a stretch of shore now celebrated as the Treasure Coast of Florida, so named for the vast bounty of gold and silver, which continues to be found there.
Three centuries later, The Rainbow Chasers Tricentennial Yearbook is a review of that disaster with emphasis on the fleet's salvage over the last six decades. The book contains many first-hand recollections of people involved in the ongoing adventure, more than twenty maps, and over two hundred photos. An analysis of the coastal venue, the ships involved, the storm track, and previously unpublished narratives round out the story.
At least two of the 1715 Fleet ships seemingly disappeared without a trace and somewhere in the wreckage a parcel of jewelry, especially crafted for Queen Isabella, has yet to be found. Where is it? The hunt continues!

300 years ago a hurricane and a lost fleet..here's the story of those who seek and find

Wow - I love it! Ok I will admit that the book features not only many divers that I personally know but also a bit about myself and my mother and our salvage work on the 1715 Spanish Plate Fleet. But all the more reason for me to be super critical also. I know the story, I know the people, this is not fiction. This book is well written and factual. The photos are not staged. The shots are collected carefully and were taken on the spot by those involved in the work, by their family, by their friends, handed down from those who have crossed the bar. Terry Armstrong has worked on the shipwrecks, and recovered the artifacts he writes about. Tommy Gore was Florida State agent overseeing wrecks from the 1715 Fleet down to the Florida Keys. After a lifetime of work that would be the envy of any diver and shipwreck historian, he continued in his "retirement" doing full-scale historic shipwreck salvage and research. (and that is not even mentioning the nearly full-time occupation of gator trapper) These are real people and real stories - the adventure is greater than any fiction - and as Tommy told me last night he hopes I find a few of the clues in the book that will bring more treasure ashore.
Any collector of shipwreck coins knows of the value of a Certificate of Authenticity: this book could be certainly be certified as authentic.
