Chuck and fiction

Like the majority of Klosterman fans, I had no idea what to expect from his fiction. Surely his writing style would still be the same, but would I be as interested in hearing a story about a make believe North Dakota town, as I was to hear him analyze the existential meanings behind episodes of saved by the bell or the real world?

I hoped I would.

So I picked up downtown owl and read it in a week's time. I felt it to be a bit slow at the onset, BUT I usually find a lot of books slow to start. Perhaps the focus on three separate characters with no interaction between them, led to a bit of a disconnect and therefore a flat beginning. But it picked up as the story went on.

As he begins to build on each of the character's personalities and lives, the reader gets a sense of the small town character and how there lives are affected by living in a place with a population of 1,000. His signature writing style appears midway through, particularly in the nuances of each character's thought processes and how that relates to their actions (in particular there is a section of what she said/what she meant, what he replied/what he was thinking, that's a bit drawn out but very klostermanic).

It helped that I didnt read the synopsis of the book so the element of surprise helped to make the ending of the book that much better (I recomment those who read it to do the same). But it was probably the last few sections where the character's really question a lot about the meaning of their own lives (and deaths) that made this book what it is. So much of klosterman's work relates to trying to find meaning in all of the little (and sometimes big, but mostly the little) things in life. The last few sections really help the reader relate to the character and feel the character emotions that he writes in for them.

I enjoyed the book and was pleasantly surprised to find that Chuck can make fictitious characters almost as fun as pop culture icons.

If this is his first novel, can't wait for his second

I'll start by saying that I've loved pretty much everything I've ever read by Klosterman. His voice is intriguing to me, the way he tells a story, writes an essay - reading his writing is like sitting and having a conversation with a friend over a beer or five, it's very readable and I have a hard time putting his books down.

I was apprehensive about Downtown Owl. I pre-ordered it without even paying attention to what it was because of the author, once I found out it was fiction I was a little nervous but I ended up really enjoying it. It's classic Klosterman, the way he describes the characters and the setting, the way the characters talk to each other, the way he tells a story. It's well developed and rich with detail and I found myself definitely wanting more when it ended - all signs of a great read.

Great Characters

Really enjoyed Downtown Owl. Finished it in two days. John Grishim is one of my favorite authors and primarily because of how well he develops the characters in his books. But Grishim's characters are always these grand people with elaborate back stories. Klosterman has some of the most interesting fictional characters I have ever read. But for the complete opposite reason. His characters are all amazingly ordinary, with ordinary lives and incredibly detailed, but realistic back stories. It is the cast of these characters and how well he details them that make this book so enjoyable.

Developing Writing Skills in French is an excellent book. It's written entirely in French. The written exercises start off being fairly easy and then become progressively more difficult as you go along. So far I've only completed the first ten exercises. However there are a total of of one hundred exercises in the book. In my opinion this book is well worth the price I paid for it. Hinn has an excellent understanding of the Bible and his personal stories help illustrate his spiritual points. There are a number of books about the blood of Jesus nowadays but Hinn's take on the issue is superb. Highly Recommended.

feel the lack of something..

To my opinion, the merit of this book is that it gives good basic knowledge about assembler and loader. Especially, the chapter about loader is very clearly written. I think that it's better than Levin's book (Linkers and Loaders).
However, the level of information is too low. If you are under-graduate student and don't have many experience about the assembly programming, this book is helpful to raise your level in system programming. But to experienced engineer, I think it will be a disappointing book.
I'd like to recommend this book as the introductory book or the summary of assembler, link and loader, compiler, os, software engineering, and so forth.

The easy path to System Software

After working on C, C++ and a little bit of Assembly languages, you feel excited about the knowledge & underlying mechanisms of assemblers, loaders and linkers etc. I have gone through this book and found it extremely helpful in getting the complex concepts of system softwares. I agree with the idea of author to give the concepts on the basis of a hypothetical machine, rather than going into the complex details of any real system. This provides a big scope of the subject, giving
you the ability to feel at ease with any system.
What I like most in this book is that, its not so big and with just eight chapters, you feel comfortable about the idea of reading the book.
I think, its a must to read book for computer science students.

Pretty Good

I found this book to be a pretty decent guide to understanding basic compilers structures. The reason I give it a four is because it's verbiage was a bit difficult to understand at times. The author begins by using a very novel example of a simple CPU and explains how to write an assembler for it and then a compiler. When you are done reading it you should be able to go off an write a pretty simple assembler, compiler and interpreter. (I did!)

The American Association of Nude Recreation (AANR) is a well established organization for clothing free/optional recreation, and one of the jewels in the AANR crown is this book.
The book thoroughly outlines each club in the US and Canada. Items such as addresses, phone numbers, and amenities of each club are meticulously detailed. So, if you're looking for a camp with a heated pool, tennis courts, sauna or snack bar, you'll easily find it herewithin.
Like many naturist/nudist publications, the book starts off with a brief intro about naturist/nudist lifestyles and why anyone would enjoy or consider a nude vacation. It is NOT a book outlining the social/political or health reasons for going nude, nor are the pictures within titillating or erotic (just like nude resorts-my favorite quote: "one nude draped on a divan is erotic; 100 nudes in line for potato salad are NOT"). It is an extremely detailed and well-researched guide to clothing free recreational areas; oh that TEXTILE CAMP GUIDES should be this thorough!
While no beaches are highlighted in this book (there is a WORLD guide for that), it is a perfect starting point for anyone considering a nude vacation.

A Fundamental Study of Nomadic Pastoralism in Inner Mongolia

In the pre-revolutionary Mongolian pastoral economy, the basic unit of production was the hoton, or hot ail. Drawing on work conducted by the Russian Mongolist A.D. Simukov in Mongolia in the 1930s, Sneath argues that the hoton is a fluid residential grouping of households, sometimes linked by kinship, and sometimes characterized by a patron-client relationship between rich households, who needed supplement labor to manager their herds, and poor households, who were remunerated with milk and wool in exchange for their services (39-41). It would seem that the hoton is a reflection of pre-existing social stratification. But how did inequality develop among the nomadic pastoralists of Inner Mongolia and elsewhere? Sneath’s field work, conducted in the late 1980s, puts him in a unique perspective to observe the development of material inequality. In the early 1980s, the People’s Communes, which had served as a kind of political and economic administrative apparatus, were disbanded and livestock and pasture were distributed to individual families. Sneath argues that several factors are responsible for the inequality that subsequently developed: herding is fundamentally uncertain, and some families experience significant losses while others are successful; individuals who are ables to influence political authorities obtain preferential access to pasture land; rich families, with too many animals for their supply of domestic labor to handle, will seek the assistance of poor families, who have too few animals for subsistence; this pattern of inequality will tend to subsist, as rich herders lease their herds out to poor families, they are unlikely be substantially affected by loss; poor families will consume a larger percentage of their herds for subsistence, making the accumulation of wealth more difficult (259).

It will seem to students less like a textbook

There are a number of health economics or healthcare economics textbooks out there. Some have been through many editions, so they must have something going for them as that indicates they are being used in health economics classes around the country. This is a new book, first edition.

I think this book is more readable than other health economics textbook. It will seem to students less like a textbook.The authors are smart, insightful, clever but also witty with the occasional joke.

Examine the tables of contents of the various books before choosing one for a class. Some other ones have more extensive coverage of traditional microeconomics topics and more of the usual graphs and charts. This book does not try to cover everything like some of the other books, but instead focuses more on a handful of topics the authors think most important. They do make a good choice in that regard.

Keep in mind this is not a comic book - the student will have to concentrate to make it through the material. But probably less likely to fall asleep than with some of the other larger textbooks.

So I recommend it for a course in health economics.
