***DECLASSIFIED*** Selous Scouts-Top Secret War

This book should be a mandatory read for Non-commissioned officers and Officers serving in special mission units or special operations the world over. In the counter-insurgency / low-intensity conflict arena there are many valuable lessons to be learned from this text, and for the armchair historian or casual reader the story is still gripping enough to keep you enthralled to the last page. Basically this is story of the birth and death of one of the most feared insurgency units of the time, as told by the founder of this outstanding unit; Ron Reid-Daly. It covers the units training, selection, operations, and personalities of the unit with the war being the tool that propels the story and evolution of the unit. One of the most remarkable aspects of Selous Scouts was their employment of pseudo-terrorist techniques, which were used to melt into know terrorist cells, to either eliminate the terrorist themselves or direct other assets to the known cells to be neutralized. While conducting these type operations the Selous Scouts maintained the cover of being a combat tracking (mantracking) unit, as to keep their true purpose under wraps from the rest of the Rhodesian Security Forces. I would also like to point out they were truly all trained trackers and maintained this capability to superb levels of proficiency. This book has been re-release as "Pamwe Chete - The Legend of the Selous Scouts" by Reid-Daly and is a completely revamped version of "SELOUS SCOUTS - Top Secret War" (original title). If you have read the original edition you will enjoy this one much better. Many areas in the book have been rewritten and their are many additions and details added to the text. Many of the names of individual have been added into this text, originally kept exempt for security and safety reasons in this version. Also there are many new photographs added and the Illustrations are a lot crisper. One of the biggest treats in the new edition is the added appendix covering; roll of honor, wing nominal roll, awards and citations. This version truly opens the door to this once `Top Secret" organization of combat trackers turned pseudo-terrorist specialist. Bottom line BOTH versions are GREAT reads!

About the Author
Algernon Blackwood is remembered best for his two superlative horror stories, "The Wendigo" and "The Willows." But in his lifetime he wrote over 150 stories, at least a dozen novels, two plays and quite a few children's books as well. Born in London on March 14, 1869, Blackwood rebelled against his strong Catholic upbringing and began studying Oriental religions and the occult, later joining several occult societies. When he reached twenty, his father sent him to Canada, and there he spent several years before entering the U.S. and becoming a reporter for the New York Sun. Returning to Britain in the late 1890's, he soon began turning some of his strange experiences into stories, beginning with "A Haunted Island," a ghost story set in the remote Canadian backwoods. An acquaintance sent these stories to a publisher and the result was The Empty House, soon followed by many more weird story collections and some truly strange and powerful novels. Storyteller, mystic, adventurer, radio and television personality--Algernon Blackwood has been all of these in his rich and varied lifetime. In fact, as he revealed to his friends, most of his stories were based on actual events. And at the time of his death in 1951, he had become one of the greatest writers of supernatural fiction in the 20th century.

Two rare and fantastic collections in one volume!

The tales in "The Lost Valley and Other Stories" (back in print for the first time in God knows how many years) are by turns mystifying, horrifying, intensely moving, funny, incredibly beautiful... and sometimes all of them at once! Algernon Blackwood is mostly remembered as a great writer of ghost stories, but he was SO much more than that - a writer of (mostly) supernatural tales with a truly unique vision. There's hardly a ghost to be found in "The Lost Valley and Other Stories", but it is chock full of other kinds of weird manifestations that are so original they are very hard to describe. Blackwood was one of a kind, and deserves to be much more widely read than he is.

As a great bonus, "The Wolves of God and Other Fey Stories" is also included in this volume. This rare collection contains a number of excellent and memorable stories, although it is from Blackwood's later, post-World War I period, when his work had lost some of the wild visionary quality that makes his early work so special. But he was still a master story-teller, and no true fan of supernatural fiction will want to be without this. The collection also includes at least a couple of stories from Blackwood's "golden period" which never found their way into the earlier collections (such as "The Man Who Found Out" and "The Empty Sleeve").

Incredible

This collection is, in a word, incredible. I can only hope that Stark House will continue to issue more of his harder to find work.

In my opinion Algernon Blackwood was the greatest practicioner of supernatural literature, he has no equal; and the stories in these two volumes will not disappoint. Blackwood has such command of narrative, that he sweeps you into his tales and leaves you quite breathless at the end. More than being frightening, the majority of these pieces will fill you with a sense of wonder and awe.

Overall, the Lost Valley is probably my favorite in the collection. It is a very emotional and tragic story, differing in style a bit from some of his other works. Most surprising to me was The Eccentricity of Simon Parnacute. Just the title is humorous, and sure enough, what ensues is a very comical and unusual tale......but then all of a sudden, he hits you with a powerful ending.

Ghosts are few and far between in this one, and that is actually a good thing. Once again, his stories are more mystical in nature.

Anybody who enjoys authors like Arthur Machen, M.R. James, Lord Dunsany, H.P. Lovecraft, or even Neil Gaiman should read this book, and anything else you can find of his.

A tantalizingly mysterious collection

The Lost Valley / The Wolves of God reprints two hard-to-find anthologies of fantasy, horror, and occult short stories in a single volume. Written by Algernon Blackwood, who forsook his Catholic upbringing to explore Oriental religion and the occult, the stories were created during the end of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century, and reflect the changing world of that tumultuous era. A tantalizingly mysterious collection, especially recommended for fans of gaslight horror and occult tales by more widely publicized authors such as H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard.

Real beginners book

This book was required for a course. It is a real beginner's book in website development. If you already have knowledge of HTML and CSS and are looking to update your knowledge this book is not for you.

If you haven't done any website development before this book does provide a start from the very beginning. It does have exercise files for working through which you can download; the link is included in the book.

The price at the time of writing seems a bit pricy. It has very large print.

Such a rip off!!!!

Needed to buy a book for college, and you know how much that sucks as is with different editions? Well at least other textbooks have different covers!

This one is EXACTLY the same cover as the other book with one slight change..... the book I need says "Complete" instead of "series" So be careful not to buy these scam artists wrong book.

This book hardly has any information in it at all, and hardly has any pages. It isn't worth the asking prices of 50 dollars and up, don't even bother.... It's not even worth buying to lead into the "complete" book, but hey nice of them to rip you off and advertise the actual book for you.....

So thanks, now I have to waste even more money buying the actual book (yay them, their scam worked!) and now I get to miss a few assignments waiting for the thing to ship. Really appreciate it......

DONT BUY, WRONG BOOK

We purchased this book because it has the same exact cover and somehow the same exact ISBN number as the "Complete" book.

IT IS NOT THE RIGHT BOOK. I'm assuming most people are like us and buying the book because its required for some course in college. you need the "Complete" book. This one has very few chapters and very little content, it doesn't have the chapters you need. You can tell the difference because it says "introductory" and they trick you into thinking its the right one.

You are basically paying an extra 25-50 dollars to buy half the book twice, if its even half its probably less. Overall its a rip off. It hardly teaches you anything, and the print is small so you will be squinting at it. Noticed the author also used a few HTML words wrong. Hopefully the actual book is better.....

It's a total gimmick, but it works

This book isn't about 100 bottles. It's more like 100 vignettes about wine. "Phoenicia", "Resin and All That", "Corkscrews", "Screw Caps", "Fraud", and many other topics aren't bottles.

The two page format for every topic is not one I like. I think the subject should define the length, rather forcing the subject to fit the length.

Nonetheless, this book reeled me in. I just wanted to keep reading. It's light, it's fluffy, and it's a gimmick. But it's fun.

Quick paced and informal survey of the history of wine

The author literally skips through the history of wine. Informal, often using slang expressions unknown to Americans it is nevertheless fun and accurate. Each topic is much like a glass of wine, tasty, sharp and fun. Good for students of wine and wine lovers. It was my beach read this week, sorry to see it end!

Let's not feel sorry for Oz Clarke, the prolific wine writer. He was faced with a huge challenge: to write the history of wine. But how? Hugh Johnson gave it a shot a quarter century ago; Jancis Robinson has taken up the cudgel as well. How does one organize such a wide and wild field of knowledge? In this volume, The History of Wine in 100 Bottles (published Tuesday by Sterling Epicure) Clarke bypasses not only long-winded history and geography but grape varieties as well; in their stead, he tells 100 stories, short bursts of wine-related anecdotes.

Nothing wrong with that; after all, that's what I did in my own book Home Grown Seattle. The trouble with the "100 stories" format is that some topics will inevitably seem trivial compared to others. "Wine in legend" merits a thoughtful historical essay, yet ends up with exactly the same space as mini-biographies of Robert Parker.and Michael Broadbent. Bag-in-box wines get an entry; David Lett gets an entry for Oregon pinot noir; Chateau Ste. Michelle and Washington State do, too (though Associated Vintners prof Lloyd Woodbourne is identified as Lloyd Woodhouse).

Still, it's a good, breezy read, bouncing briskly from one decade to the next, one continent to another, taking into account forgotten details (Hitler had a collection of half a million bottles, and he didn't even like wine), and embarrassing moments (Rudy Kurniawan's fraudulent bottles). If this were Clarke's first (or only) book, one might hesitate to recommend it. But for those of us whose shelves are already creaking with the classic titles, this is the sort of reference work you want to keep closer at hand.

Great book about an amazing movie

Fans of the late Brandon Lee and of the movie "The Crow", I highly recommend this book. The book describes in detail of the events before and during the filming of "The Crow", from the creation of the comic book "The Crow" by James O' Barr... to the start of production... to the tragic shooting death of Brandon Lee... to finishing the film without Lee using computer technology and stunt doubles. It also talks about the other people involved in the movie, (i.e. actors, actresses, director, producer, stunt coordinator, etc...). This book not only describes the events that took place during the filming process, but also has a short, but informative bio on Brandon Lee before he took on the role as Eric Draven. The most gripping part of the book is when the author, Bridget Baiss, describes the events leading up the the shooting death of Brandon Lee, until his death on the operating table. It was so thoroughly described that I felt I was actually there to witness it for myself, it sent chills down my spine as I read it. For those who want to get the whole story of this amazing movie, and the tragedy that happened because of it, this is the book to read.

Such a wonderful Book~!

I really enjoyed reading "The Crow -Story behind the film"...every chapter,every page,EVERY WORD was exciting to read on through this book.Perhaps because I am such a Brandon Lee fan and still 'til this day do I believe that The Crow was arguably his best work ever..and this book tells it ALL~!......from its origins as first starting out being a comic book,trying to make this gothic love story into a film,the struggles of making the movie,of course the hugest tragedy which took the life of the young star,the cause of his death and how the movie was finished without the late Brandon Lee......the best part about this book was how the author got so much information from different cast and crew members who were all once part of the film....this was the best part about the book since I was so curious to know how each and every person who was responsible in making this film felt about making it and how they reacted to that fateful nite of the shooting .....as well as how they or if they ever learned to cope with this difficult experience.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to every CROW/Brandon Lee fan or anyone who once saw this film and became interested in what exactly happened on the set to this promising actor who had such a promising future .......I have collected many Brandon Lee memorabilias in almost the past decade but I must say that this book is definitely the most treasured one I have since it closes the ending chapter to the person I admire so much.

To Find Out What Really Happened . . . .

As a longtime Crow fan, I was interested in finding out exactly what happened behind the scenes during the production of the film. Baiss' book does an excellent job of providing this information, through the use of quotes taken from several crew and cast members. My only criticism is how poorly the book was written. I am not sure who the editor is, but the book is riddled with grammatical and typographical errors to the point where I don't understand how it made it to publication. Her flow is also a little difficult to follow in places, although this may simply be a result of Baiss being a first-time writer. Also, most of the major individuals involved in the production of this film, including the director, would not speak with Baiss, so the account is mainly from the view of several cast and technical crew members. I would, however, recommend it for those interested in what really happened during production of "The Crow." I came away knowing more than I had before, even if I had trouble wading through all the typos.

The book is elaborate expression of AZAD Kashmir scenario. COMPARATIVELY Kashmir valley is we'll govern under catalistic situation. If we in India having so many cast creed can live independently keeping our own identity why not kashmiriat in India. India is a continent worth as an example to the world? Writers not mentioning any discussion on Kashmir valley raises lopsided attitude.
