Welcome back to Castle Creek! You may remember Seth and Ivy from STAYING AT JOE'S. Seth's a feed store owner and single father of two who has a thing for Ivy, a flirty dairy farmer. Unfortunately, Ivy's not a forever kind of girl, while Seth is done with casual, which means a happy ever after just isn't in the cards for these two.

At least, it wasn't until I wrote their story. :-)

Compromise is the name of the game here. Compromise, and adjusting expectations. While Ivy struggles to convince Seth he's asking too much of her, she gradually realizes she's asking too little of herself. And though Seth's kids are everything to him, he begins to understand that having Ivy in their lives could be the best thing he's ever done for them. Concession can be tough, but it can also win you the love of your life.

So let the games begin. :-)

Running from Love in a Quirky Town

Ivy Millbrook isn't interested in happily-ever-after. The only thing she wants from Seth Walker is no-strings-attached fun. Too bad Seth is holding out for the white picket fence. As a single father of two, he is the epitome of commitment and the complete opposite of Ivy. They're at a standstill. The situation intensifies when Seth insists on helping Ivy save her dairy farm. With the kids in tow, working together isn't easy. But is the prospect of losing each other forever enough to push them toward a compromise?

Wow, what an oddball community of people Ivy is part of. Kind hearted but people who definitely march to their own drummer. Of course Seth is part of that same community but Ivy seems to have the funniest people around her. I liked each one of them, especially the older women in the group who didn't slow down with age. Scratch that, I LOVED those women! They added so much to the story, they danced around like they were still young'uns. . Seth's friends were unique as well and this story isn't just about the romance troubles between the MC's. There were several other romances being worked out as well. Ivy was hiding secret hurts, things she felt that she couldn't share with anyone else, especially Seth. But that also adds to their inability to reach an agreement on how to proceed with their attraction. So most of the time it didn't proceed even though it left the both frustrated and hurting. Seth was a rescuer,someone who helped his friends sometimes even to his own hurt at times. He was great with his kids too, even though he often felt like he was over his head on that, especially with his daughter, Grace. These people in this town were some of the hardest working people around especially both Ivy AND Seth.
All in All I liked the story, not one that I would be keeping but one that I did enjoy when I was reading it. There were some parts I liked better than others.
There is also a quick look into the book,"Cowboy Who Came for Christmas".
Nice choice for the cover of this book.

Very nice rural love story

Ivy runs the Millstone Dairy Farm she inherited when her parents died in a cruise ship accident when she was 22. She runs the farm with the help of a manager and two part time workers. If you don't know anything about dairy farming, this author knows her stuff. Ivy works long hours and does not have much time for a social life. She has the hots for Seth who moved to town and bought the feed store. Ivy wants a no strings relationship, but Seth is looking for a wife and a mother for his two children.

They have had this attraction, but cannot come to terms. Seth tells her he is going to look for someone ready to commit. Then her manager quits with no notice and her hired hand walks off because she won't make him manager after making her very uncomfortable. Ivy finally has to ask Seth for temporary help. Now Ivy has to work closely with Seth, come to terms with her past and his children and try to keep everyone safe from her former employee.

I liked the other characters in this quirky little town. We weave through the relationship angst and ups and downs of their lives. The farming is spot on in case you have ever wondered how milk gets from the cow to your market. There is no instant love and no convenient pregnancy to keep Seth and Ivy from having to do the hard relationship work. Best of all, neither is a billionaire.

Love in A Small Town

This is the first book I've read by this author.
I have lived in cities for most of my life, so it's sometimes difficult for me to relate to small town stories.
However, from the very beginning the story drew me in and I became interested in the lives of the characters, perhaps because though the story took place in a small town, it was a look at life as can happen anyplace.
The hero and heroine are multi-dimensional and both have layers and blind spots , as do the other characters. I did have the feeling at points that this was not the first book in a series,but quick reviews of storylines were naturally seamed into the weaving of the story. The plot was well-defined and held my interest.
I really liked the characters and their devotion to each other as friends. It made sense for their relationship to evolve into love, as was true of a pair of secondary characters in the book
I enjoyed the way the story unfolded, betwen the main characters as well as the others; there is a nice flow and natural rhythm to the relationships. Much of the story is inspired by a sense of place, an appreciation for the past, and unexpected amd often small pleasures in life. A very good read

This is a great book!

INTRODUCTION

This book defends a very sophisticated view of positivism. First of all, it is remarkable how comprehensive, loyal and clear the book is while stating the arguments of authors that are against positivism. For instance, Shapiro dedicates a very good part of the book criticizing Ronald Dworkin for his very closed and strict sense of morality.

SHAPIRO'S MAIN THESIS

Shapiro's main thesis is that laws are plans and they are designed to make sure people can plan safely the outcomes of their actions. They are not derived from some metaphysical source of rights, they are created in an intersubjetive way, which makes them at a large extent contingent. Therefore, it is vital that law remains predictable and established in advance.

LAW AND MORALITY

Shapiro says most positivists were wrong when defending that laws have nothing to do with morality. Of course they do, he says, because as plans they aim at several goals, some of them are economic (promoting welfare, for example), but many of them are, in fact, moral (like preserving fairness).
That doesn't mean that morality is something given a priori, something away from us that falls over our heads. Moreover, this conclusion of his makes laws in general defeasible, but not in order to cope with some ideal vision of morality, based on what judge Hercules thinks (like Dworkin wants), but because laws are defeasible in their own terms. Since they are plans, they were made to be applied in certain circunstances, which means they shouldn't be enforced come what may, like some hardcore positivists want.

LEGISLATING IS PLANNING

The law must be enacted in a democratic environment, so that people can decide as a community, in which everyone's vote has equal measure.
This is the intrinsic worth of legality (from which comes the title of the book), namely, that we all sit down and talk and plan something ahead of time, so that judges can apply it according to what was previously decided, and not according to whatever comes into their minds at a given time. That is the rule of law, which is in itself a requirement of fairness, because it lets all of the subjects involved take part in the discussion and figure out what rules they want to regulate their lives. Democracy is not the government of men, but of the law, passed by the people. This is crucial.

GOOD QUOTES

Furthermore, I should take notice of the fact that Shapiro quotes some passages of paramount importance and that he clearly explains the arguments of most of the philosophers of law of our time, without assuming prior knowledge from the reader. He quotes some passages of paramount importance from, for example, Hans Kelsen, H.L.A. Hart, Jeremy Waldron, Lon Fuller, Ronald Dworkin, Richard Posner, Justice Scalia, Hendrik Hertzberg, etc. The list is long and Shapiro comments on them very well.
For all of this, he deserves, in my view, a lot of credit.

CONCLUSION

It is well-thought, extremely readable (good for both advanced readers and beginners), and makes some remarkable points about philosophy of law, originalism, rule of law, Supreme Court, Pragmatic Adjudication, Democracy, etc.
It is totally worth reading. I highly recommend this book and believe it will become a classic in the years to come (or it least it should, as long as people appreciate what is good).

About the Author
A.J. (Lonnie) Strickland received a BS in Math and Physics from the University of Georgia, an MS in Industrial Management from Georgia Institute of Technology, and a PhD from Georgia State university. He currently holds the rank of Professor of Strategic Management in the Graduate School of Business at the University of Alabama. He has done extensive consulting and research work. In recent years, he was honored with the Outstanding Professor Award for the Graduate School of Business, and was the recipient of the Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award for the University of Alabama.

John E. Gamble is currently Associate Dean and Professor of Management in the Mitchell College of Business at the University of South Alabama. His teaching specialty at USA is strategic management and he also conducts a course in strategic management in Germany, which is sponsored by the University of Applied Sciences in Worms. Dr. Gamble's research interests center on strategic issues in entrepreneurial, health care, and manufacturing settings. His work has been published in various scholarly journals and he is the author or co-author of more than 50 case studies published in an assortment of strategic management and strategic marketing texts. He has done consulting on industry and market analysis for clients in a diverse mix of industries. Professor Gamble received his Ph.D. in management from the University of Alabama in 1995. Dr. Gamble also has a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Alabama.

I rented this book from Amazon, and I would tell you that I liked it so much that I will be using it for future references. I used it for my Strategic Management class for Supervision and Management.
I had to do about four presentations from the cases of this book. I enjoyed the cases in this book, I even read most of them. like I said I will be using this version or future versions of this book for references.

This wasn't my favorite textbook, but I did enjoy the thorough case ...

This wasn't my favorite textbook, but I did enjoy the thorough case studies at the end of the book. I used those more than the chapter contents by far. Regardless, this was a mandatory purchase. I did appreciate the Amazon rental option as I am someone who doesn't like to hold onto unnecessary items.

4 stars!!! Of course I'm an Amazon, fan and definitely love the fact that I was able to rent this book instead of being duped out of $336 from my school website. Same book, brand new and saved me a ton of money!
